I have been trying out a lot of free VST plug-ins over the last few weeks to incorporate into my Sonar sequencer and B&B tracks. Many are so-so and often of poor quality but I’ve finally hit upon real top quality set. They are by Kjaerhusaudio and hard to believe are free!!. I have been running them without any problems on my 64bit version of Sonar and Vista. (They will also run on 32bit and XP I’m sure)
www.kjaerhusaudio.com

Click “Download” and you’ll see them at the bottom of the screen. They are listed as the Classic set with auto-filter; Chorus; Compressor; Delay; EQ; Flanger; Master limiter; Phaser and Reverb. The files are not big and are very efficient on CPU usage.

Click on the name of the unit and there’s a description, key features tab and Tips tab.

The Master limiter is particularly effective for a guitar track as it brings “forward” with presence the track in the whole sound image. Really high quality stuff and worth a look if you’re doing mixes.

Cheers F

These effects have been mentioned here a few times over the years, and always with good regard.

Thanks Guys. Well there's nothing like a good discovery and it must have been mentioned before I joined the forum.
So repeated here again and for good reasons. Cheers.

Guys

If you are beginning to get hooked on free VSTs, you might want to try the following resource:

www.gersic.com/plugins

This is a directory of literally hundreds of free VSTs (including the Kjaerhus ones mentioned in the original post). Some are excellent, some are, well, let's be generous, useful in certain situations! Makers who often receive plaudits include Martin Eastwood (compressive is a favourite of mine), DIgitalfishphones (whose Spitfish De-esser is regularly recommended in Sound on Sound and used by me!), de al Mancha, Jeron Breebart and Bootsy (who recently won the KVR-Audio challenge for best freeware plug-in). There are also hundreds of VSTis - masses of Moog, Odessey and Prophet clones, as well as more original conceptions.

www.kvr-audio.com also has a fine database, with reviews, and a news section regularly used by PG Music!

Finally, if you have access to the UK Computer Music magazine (which I understand is also available in the US), its cover disk has about 100 quality free VST/VSTis each month, all with descriptions.

Hope this is of interest.

The older freeamp2 was a much deeper plugin that gave some systems problems, but I liked it a lot. Its down a little bit on the page.

The new freeamp3 does sound a little better, but offers less options and controls. I think you can get more than three FX slots going in it.

There is a helian bass amp sim that works pretty well also for free. Getting harder to find. It doesn't have much in the way of FX, but the amp/speaker sim makes a noticable difference.

If you're prepared to use a separate guitar preamp/head and speaker cabinet, there are a couple of Canadian companies produced astonishingly good free guitar amp VSTs.

Acmebargig (www.acmebargig.com) has produced some fantastic amps. The new "Shred" amp is good fun, with a lot of customisation, but I like some of the older "heads", particularly the "Tamla Head", a recreation of a 1960s guitar sound similar to the Funk Brothers Motown sort of sound.

LePou software (http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/) produces really high quality stuff. The LexTac amp is amazing and completely free.

With all these plugins, you'll also need a cabinet simulator. LePou has a really handy one called LeCab, which is free and dead easy to use. Alternatively, any reverb which loads waves (like Perfect Space in sonar, or Boogex - free from Voxengo) would do. There are literally thousands of guitar cab wav files on the internet. There are some free demo wav files at the Recabinet site (http://recabi.net/site/) which are really cool when used with LeCab.

The separate guitar and cabinet approach is more work, but can be really rewarding when used with any freeware stomp box models.

I also have Amplitube, but that's $159 and not as much fun!

Brian

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
