I have Realband and BIAB 2010 and have seen alot about TC Helicon. Its my understanding the only way to use it in Realband is to have Power Tracks installed as well? I use Realband most of the time. My question is this.......
Is it possible in any of these to import a vocal track made in say Sonar, and create harmonies using TC Helicon or does the track have to be recorded "inside" one of the programs?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi senn5,

You are correct. You need the latest version of PowerTracks (and latest update) to get TC Helicon in RB.

I often record my vocals in Sonar and then take them to RB to add harmonies with TC Helicon. I then save my harmonies as separate tracks and export them across in to Sonar for mixing.

Here's a link to a recent post of mine where I did exactly that.

The trick I use is to keep the 2-bar count-in active - even when I load RB/BIAB tracks into Sonar. This makes it very easy to align everything because I simply import all files at the beginning of a track. The other thing to keep in mind is that it helps to have Sonar, BIAB and RB all set to the same tempo.

All the best,
Noel

Liked your work by the way. And thanks again for your quick responce.

FWIW: Realband does not include TC Helicom. However, it is not necessary to have the latest version of Power Tracks to get harmonies into your song.

Once my song is named in Realband, I open it in PT11, make my harmonies there, save it again, and reopen it is RealBand.

As an alternative to spending more money, you could try a free vocal plugin named GSNAP (search for it on google)

I don't think it adds harmonies, but it WOULD help to keep individual harmony tracks on pitch. In other words, you can add harmonies by singing a harmony part (or two. Or three) Then if they are not perfectly in tune, use GSNAP to fix them . There are advantages to using this approach:

1) there will be slight variations between timing of the parts, which will make it sound more like multiple backup singers (whereas automated harmonies can sound "too perfect" or programmed)

2) you can put each part on a separate track and tweak them individually

3) if you make a mistake you only have to redo the one part. With auto-harmonizers you end up doing it all at once, so one mistake invalidates the whole enchilada

4) its free

5) Automated harmonies require a real learning curve to get the harmony I want (and there are MANY variations on harmonies.. very frustrating to pick a preset that gets all the notes right, but one). If you go the route of actually singing your own harmony, you can get it the way you hear it in your head the first time. I have literally wasted days trying to find the right harmony in TC Helicon's list of presets. In some cases, I've given up entirely.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
