I want to write my own drum part. But whatever I write will be overwritten by the Style when the file is played. What can I do?
Thanks

Copy and move it to the soloist part where it will remain static and you can edit it. Then mute the actual drum part.

Can't you 'freeze' it as another option?
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Yes. This is the best option.

I finally got the time to fiddle around and realised I didn't know how to "freeze" the drum part in a Style nor copy the drum patch (i.e instrument) to the solo track. (Copying the notes is ok. But not sure how to make drum as the instrument used in Solo.)
Could someone help me out? Thanks.

The "Freeze" option is only present in the latest version of Band-in-a-Box, version 2010. You should see a "snowflake" button in the main toolbar, or you can access the freeze options by right-clicking on the track name or from the Play menu. Once frozen, you can edit the drum track as much as possible.
For drums to work on the Soloist track, you can set the Soloist track type to multi-channel. Drums need to use MIDI channel 10. By default, the Soloist track uses a single channel that is not channel 10. You can use 'Soloist menu | Track type' to set it to multi-channel. Choose patch 1 (standard drum kit). For your inserted notes to default to channel 10, you can set the option in Notation Window options | More... | Inserted note defaults.

Thanks Andrew. I don't have the latest BIAB version. (Hmm, maybe a good reason to upgrade. ) But I'll give the Solo track a try.
Once again, many thanks.

Andrew,
I still couldn't get drum sounds in the Solo track. I think I missed something obvious. This is what I did:
- Change the solo track to multi-channel - Go to Notation Windows > Options > More, Change Insert Channel to 10 - Go to the drum part in the notation window, highlight the selection I wanted, Edit > Copy. Then go to the Solo notation window, Paste. - Select Patch 1 in the Instrument dropdown box. But it displays Piano, not Standard Drum kit - Play it. It's piano sounds...

Hello davey,
You could reduce the volumes of all the other tracks in your song. To do this, you could (temporarily if you want) check the option in Opt.-Prefs to "reduce other part volumes when clicking past 127".
Alternatively, if you're finding that ALL RealDrums are too soft, you could adjust the global dB setting in the RealDrums Preferences dialog. Setting that to 5 or 10 dB will probably be enough.

If you hear Piano instead of Drums, then the part is on a track that is NOT set to Channel 10 (presuming you are using a standard GM compat MIDI synth). Check the Multi SEQ to see which track and channel your paste ended up on.
You could open the part you pasted in Notation View, hit Edit and then Rightclick on the first note to see what channel it is on.
Ignore the dropdown window - it is permanently set to show you the Melodic Instrument Patchnames, but when the part is on MIDI channel 10, they apply to the Percussion Banks. The Percussion Bank changes kits every 8 Patchnames on the list, so the Piano would be selecting Percussion 001 - Standard Drumkit. But it must be on MIDI Channel 10 to work that way.

. Having the "freeze" option is a huge reason to upgrade. It kinda changes the whole game. Worth it.

Mac,
Great, thanks! It works now. What confused me was, even if it's in Channel 10, BIAB still previews the sound in piano when you are inserting notes. But it plays fine in normal playing.
Once again, thanks Mac and Andrew.

DaveyScott, a tip: you should remove (edit out) your email address as soon as you know Graham got it. Or, better, send your email address to him in a PM. It's not wise to post an email address in an open forum; spammers love that.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
