Hmmm, I wonder if it will run as a VM. I'll have to see if that works.

Interesting - BIAB in a VM, even on a screaming bleeding edge PC, would not be my choice for BIAB usage (let alone a full blown DAW)

but report back - i'd be interested in results.

Or were you asking about availability of a VM in Win 8?

[sidebar: can't wait to find out what SW/HW has to be replaced because it's too old with Win 8)

I was talking about Win8 in a VM (I own VMWare Desktop), so might give it a try.

Once installed, I can try installing the apps I normally run. Of course, it's really pre-beta (full beta in February), so it may not run well at all right now.

Will download tonight and see what happens.

Just in case anyone missed this part from the MS page;

Quote:

Note: You can't uninstall the Windows 8 Developer Preview. To go back to your previous operating system, you must reinstall it from restore or installation media.

So proceed with caution, or use a fresh machine. It may be worth checking to see if a dual boot is possible using a seperate drive if you're really chomping at the bit to try it.

That's why I want to try it as a VM, since the VM is presented to the operating system as a "real machine", even though it's just a file on your existing computer. I have successfully installed MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 as VMs, so I'm hoping this will work also.

It seems this release is heavy on using touch screens. I don't personally understand the drive to have the same o/s on my phone as the one on my computer.

However, the salient points are:

1. If the future is thin, all in one screens, like a tablet with the power of a PC, how can this be used by the gigging musician, as in lets have our tablet on a music stand.

2. How can the band in a box interface support all we need on a this pc running windows 9? Is the future a play 'skin' and interface, and a different skin for input/development of our tune, getting it ready for the playlist.

And of course:

3. Will this new 128 bit program having hooks to the cloud play heavenly music?

You beat me to it - I had a whole latest and greatest "128 bit" VSTi (so much better than real analog you can actually smell the bow rosin and the drummers under arms) gag line ready but you type faster than me

jford,

Yes Windows 8 runs beautifully as a VM on VMWare Workstation 8 - It won't run on Workstation 7 though. If you download the free 30 day trial of VMWare 8, it contains VMWare Player 4 and Windows 8 will continue to to run on that even after the trial ends.

BiaB 2012 also runs nicely on this Windows 8 VM - in fact when I put it in full screen mode I completely forget it's a VM !

(NO my pc isn't "screeming bleeding edge" but it IS i7 based)

Hope this helps!

Ole

Thanks, Ole -

I'm a licensed user of VMWare 8, so that's good to know.

Just installed Windows 8 (Developer Pre-Release version) in a Virtual Machine (VMWare) and it seems to run fine - well, it loads and gives me my desktop and the new start menu (which I need to figure out). After I play with it some, I'll install BIAB and RealBand and see what happens. I installed the 64-bit version, but there is a 32-bit version available, also.

Yes, BIAB and RealBand run fine on Windows 8, in our tests. (Rob @ PGMusic has been testing it out)

Hmmm, with a touch screen can I hit Brent Mason's icon and he jumps out and asks me what I need and I tell him to play some comping licks starting at bar 8, do that for the first time through the head, switch to some simple rhythm the second time, start his solo at bar 46 and create something cool for the break at the 2nd ending.

I know, I know I still want my Star Trek library computer...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
