A little musical help would be appreciated. I have a nice BIAB arrangement of Grant Green's Idle Moments that I play along with. However, I would like to reduce the arrangement to just bass & drums.

My question, how do I create that nice harmony line of the opening chord progression (Cm, CmMaj7, Cm7, Cm6)with just the bass part? Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

#1. You can go to bar settings, I think the shortcut is F5, mute any instrument/track you like for whatever and how many bars you like.

#2. Not sure if this will give you any harmony but it will give you just the bass line if only the bass track is left playing.

Hope this helps,

You could try forcing Pedal Bass with use of slash chords to yield the descending bassline that follows the extensions of the Cm chord:

Cm - CmMaj7/B - Cm7/Bb - Cm6/A

It may sound cleaner in some instances to ignore the extensions in the upper chord voices, yielding a simpler arrangement where only the Bass does the cascading line:

Cm - Cm/B - Cm/Bb - Cm/A

Slash chords can be used to force the Bass to any note.

Just enter C, B, Bb, A, since you're the only chord player. No need for slash chords. Later, Ray

I would go ahead and enter the slash chords because some time in the future it may be apropos to add another part in there and I'd want the program to know the right chords to do that.

It also would make more sense when reading along with BiaB, if you haven't olayed the song in a while, you might not remember and those simple chords won't be of any help - until it was too late - as in live gig or the likes. Enter the right chords and be done with it, works with just Bass and Drums, works with Quartet as well.

Thanks Mac,

I tried the slash chords with the original progression (Cm,CnMaj7,Cm7,Cm6) and that gave me a nice bass line. Thanks for everyone's help.

Poor Duke Pearson! First he doesn't get the credit for writing the song in the first place, then you want to silence the piano part!! Shame on you!!!

Being a guitar player of course I identify Idle Moments with Grant Green (he and Kenny Burrell being two of my favorite jazz guitarists), but mucho kudos to Duke Pearson for writing one of the great "turn down the lights" jazz tunes of all time!

Joking apart, it is one of my 3 or 4 favourite jazz albums of all time. After reading your post, I went off to bed with a good book and Grant Green (with Duke Pearson, of course!) on the Ipod. Great stuff.

+1 for Duke Pearson! And his band. I still play his version of "Book's Bossa" nearly every concert.

I likes me da way dis man thinks! *grin*

When facing the situation of adding a new (to me) guitarist to my little jazz combo in which I have to play the piano or organ mostly, one of the first things I find out is whether or not the guitarist can "gimmie the comp like Kenny" in a Blues. All downpick, all inside chords, mostly one per beat, all tritoned up, and all funky. If said guitarist can't do it, and there have been far too many of late who cannot, they usually receive a CD from me with a copy of Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon" on it and are sent on their merry way...

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
