1. I've noticed if you have a bunch of succeeding bars with the same chord (for instance 4 bars with guitar playing D chord) the guitar isn't played exactly the same way on all bars. Can this be controlled somehow?

2. I've noticed that there's something called substyle a and b. Where can I see exactly what the difference is?

1. If you mean a MIDI guitar part, variation can be edited and controlled in the stylemaker. If you mean a RealTrack, then you are listening to a live recording of snippets and I don't think you can make multiple measures play exactly the same way. You could try repeating the chord each measure and see if that helps. You could also go into RealBand or another sequencer software and copy a pattern you like to other measures.

2. You can see substyle A by a blue marker at the measure number, and B by a green marker. If you mean, what differences will you hear, then it depends. In most styles, the B substyle is 'busier'. Some styles might have the bass play in 2 for the A part and switch to a walking bass for the B part, for example. However, you have to audition the styles to know how the A and B parts differ for each style.

Typing the same chord on each bar didn't make a difference.

I know I can cut an audio file in an audio editor, but then the simplicity of BiaB gets lost.

After listening to a few RealTrack sets it seems the recordings never are really basic. I'd like some strumming and picking without any fancy stuff (even though it's minor), but that's just my humble opinion :-)

If you do not want to deal with audio snippets, then you are limited to BIAB-MIDI styles as opposed to styles that use Real Tracks. In that case, you need to read thru the Style Maker Overview - the part that deals with how BIAB chooses variations within sub-styles. Sub-styles just allow BIAB to vary the style as the song moves from verse to chorus and back to verse. Each sub-style (A or B) can have up to 12 different patterns to choose from as it moves from one bar to the next. This is to avoid styles that sound too repetitious or robotic. Each pattern is assigned a "weight" number. Patterns with a "weight" of "1" are seldom chosen, while patterns with a "weight" of "9" are ALWAYS chosen. I don't recommend changing original styles, so copy your chosen style to a new style name; bring it up in Style Maker and change the "weight" of your chosen pattern to "9" and the "weights" of all other patterns to "1"; save it; and you are in business. You can now create a song that uses the same pattern all the way thru. If you desire, you can do this with just the non-drum parts and still leave some variation in the drum parts as their "weights" are assigned separately. The more familiar you get with Style Maker, the more proficient you become with tailoring styles to your specific tastes or needs.

If you would choose to deal with Real Tracks audio snippets, then I would recommend a program like Sony Acid Studio or MAGIX Music Maker MX. They are DAW sequencers, but their specialty is in dealing with audio snippets. You can put together an entire song of snippets with them fairly rapidly.

Good luck !

Regards,

Ted

You can do the same with RB and BiaB now as they have looping tools.

Thanks much Robh.

I had missed that. You just gave me a reason for upgrading my old BIAB 2008 to BIAB 2012. The "New Features" list of BIAB is always so extensive that it is easy to overlook something, and I usually don't upgrade until there is something new that I really want or need. Bouncing back and forth between BIAB and Sony Acid or BIAB and Music Maker is a real pain.

So that means that Alexander should be able to do what I was suggesting all right within BIAB. That is great !

Regards,

Ted

I have BiaB 2011.5.
I'm reading about 2012 now.
It says "We’ve added a Simpler RealTracks setting – a checkbox that makes the RealTracks play a less busy or embellished arrangement."
Wonder what this means exactly and if it relates to my request somehow?

I don't think the "LESS BUSY" option would give you what you are looking for. You want a guitar pattern that is more constant, that is, that doesn't vary its pattern every few bars (or every bar, in some cases).

The "LESS BUSY" option usually just means FEWER INSTRUMENTS in the accompaniment - for example just piano, drums, and bass with no guitar or strings, etc, or possibly fewer notes from one or more of the instruments, but bar-to-bar variations of some amount would most likely still be there. If you already had BiaB 2012, I would say give it a try, what do you have to lose (?), but I would hate to see you spend the money for the upgrade strictly for that reason, only to be disappointed. You might want to take your question to BiaB Support and ask for a specific definition of "LESS BUSY".

Regards,

Ted

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
