This week I installed BIAB 2012 on a brand new Dell laptop (6 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive), all seemed well earlier. Used it today at church for the first time at during the first song (one I programmed, not downloaded), about 20 bars from the end, the RealDrums slowed down but the other tracks did not. There is no programmed tempo change; the RealDrums just got seriously out of sync. The style I used is ^underscoreJFFIERY EV 16 75 (although the song tempo is 113).

The rest of the set went fine. What happened and how do I make sure this doesn't happen again?

Thanks,
JK

Hi JK,

I'm not sure what happened but one way to avoid this is to generate the arrangement at home (prior to the event) and then "Freeze" all the tracks. This can be found under the "Combo" menu by right-click the mouse over "Combo".

It's also possible to freeze individual tracks by right-clicking on the track's name. (e.g. the Drum track below.)

Freezing tracks does two things.
  • It preserves the tracks exactly as they were generated.
  • It also makes the song load much quicker for playblack.

NOTE: The asterisk (*) next to a track indicates it is frozen and if you ever want to regenerate a track, it's necessary to unfreeze it first. In the below image, the Guitar track is frozen but the Strings track is not.

Hope this is useful,
Noel

Good advice to try from Noel.

I'm puzzled by this.

You should always try Opt., Return to Factory Settings when things don't work as you think they should. You will first be prompted to save your settings, so it's safe.

Did you by any chance use the Audio Chord Wizard and create a tempo map? I know you said there were no programmed tempo changes, but that is different.

And, when you say all the other tracks did not slow down, only the RealDrums track, were those other tracks MIDI or RealTracks? I don't know what to do based on the answer to this, but it might help diagnose the problem.

Since you have a new PC, it's unlikely that this would help, but there are some settings in the Preferences, RealTracks and RealDrums dialogs that can improve their performance. Hover over the checkboxes for explanations.

You might want to give PG Music Support a call on this one if none of the above ideas are on target.

No, I didn't use the Audio Chord Wizard. The other tracks on this song are RealTracks.

I've been using BIAB for many years, started using RealDrums a couple of years ago, and just decided to finally start using RealTracks; that's why I just bought a new laptop this week - my 9-year-old Dell I have been using didn't have enough memory to handle them well.

I play guitar and sing and I usually program bass, piano, drums, and organ or strings. When we have a keyboard player I mute the keyboard track, which I did today. She also has BIAB (2011), and our routine has been for me to email her the .sgu files to rehearse with at home before our service, and this has always worked well. But when I emailed her this week's songs (with RealTracks for the first time), she said nothing worked right on her computer (she has RealTracks, too); some tracks played but others didn't. She reset the factory options and things got even worse. She even reinstalled her BIAB program and it didn't help.

The songs are playing fine on my computer now, but it sure was embarrassing to have such a major meltdown in the first song of a praise and worship set at our church. I had rehearsed that song several times this week with no problem, and it plays okay on another computer in my office that I use to program the song sometimes, as I did this song (it's a 6-month old HP, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive). This had never, ever happened before on my old Dell using BIAB 2010.5 (without RealTracks, of course). For what it's worth, when I was rehearsing the problem song, I did not have the piano track muted, but I cant' see how that would matter.

OK, that's a lot clearer, thanks. It's still quite a puzzle.

Off-the-wall guess: did you by any chance leave the computer and BIAB running for the whole week during the repeated plays for rehearsals and then performance? A Windows out-of-resources problem?

As for the muted piano track, can you repeat the problem by doing that? I don't think it would matter, either, but when tracking down bugs, anything out of the ordinary could be a clue for when you talk with PG Music Support.

Is it possible you have used RealTracks in your version 2012 that she doesn't have in 2011? Also, I think by version 2011, BIAB was using the newer format of RealTracks, but that's something to verify with Support. At one point around there, newer format tracks would not work with the older version. [None of this has to do with your slowdown problem, just the problem of transferring songs to her computer.]

A couple of possibilities spring to mind regarding this.
  • She might not have the realtracks that you do.
  • PG Music implemented a change in audio manipulation of Realtracks a couple of versions ago. Also, there was an update to the BIAB engine in 2012. It may be that some of your Realtracks are incompatible with her version of BIAB. (From memory, the change came with version 2011.) I suggest you contact PG Music about this and ask.

Do you know what version of the program the keyboard player has (for example, 2010 UltraPlusPAK, etc.)?

I still highly recommend freezing the tracks on your computer when you have them working alright at home. This is a good safeguard.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. Looks like Matt and I were thinking along the same lines

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
