...and what, in your opinion, distinguishes them from competing apps (both iOS and Windows).
On a side note - this may interest some of you. I visit a site every day called ioSnoops.com which gives consolidated lists of iPad apps available for free that day, or on sale that day. I take a quick look at the thumbnail and description of each, and download for later. It's a great site.

Keebo - that's a lot of apps - and I'm also a 'bargain hunter', downloading free apps every day. Of all the apps you listed, which do you use the most. If we divide your iPad time by the number of apps you own, surely you're not on all of them equally. That's what I mean by 'best', the 'best' for you, or those apps you spend the most time with.

One app missing off Keebo's list and one that is available for iPhone, iPad and Android is Chordbot. It was recently updated to version 2 on the iPhone and iPad. It is a Band In A Box type program based around midi. You can edit styles now so it is open ended. Buy this one or use the free version - you won't be disappointed. Songs can be exported as midi, wav or m4a. Kevin

I copied and pasted this from my "Keep Up With Your Apps, Fool" list I have. There were also some less than desirable music apps on there as well as some non musical apps. I deleting them for this post but must have deleted some keepers accidentally.
Chordbot is definitely one of those especially now with the great update as Kevin mentioned.
Also missing from the list is the must have AudioBus. For the first time on iOS you can record audio through the bus to another recording app. Prior to AudioBus, one had to audio copy and then audio paste to another app that supports audio copy/paste. Sometimes, this had to be done via email, dropbox, fps, etc. AudioBus is still in its infancy so there are only around 20 or so apps that support it thus far but will certainly grow as the sdk is made available to more developers.
Auria and BeatMaker 2 are my most used DAWs. Auria has not yet implemented MIDI so BM2 gets the nod for sequencing MIDI. Neither support AudioBus yet but the developers are working on it. Multitrack DAW supports AudioBus so I use it frequently to record audio from other apps then paste it into Auria or BM2.
JamUp Pro takes good care of my guitar needs and supports AudioBus. I bought the JamUp Plug guitar audio interface but it is a little finicky with feedback as it is going through the iDevice mic input. I now use a Griffin StudioConnect Audio/MIDI interface for guitar, acoustic and vocal recordings. This works much better. And it props up the iPad on my desk for convenience.
I like DrumJam and DM-1 Drum Machine for my percussion needs. DrumJam supports AudioBus and DM-1 will be on the bus soon. Sorely missing from iOS is JamStix. The developer has future plans for us though.
SampleTank and GarageBand are the apps I use most for piano sounds. Both have decent strings and other bread and butter sounds. The Smart Instruments in GarageBand make it easy to scratch out ideas quickly.
There are some really great synth apps available that make it hard to choose a must have. Currently the most used would probably be Magellan, Animoog, Alchemy, Addictive, and PPG Wavegenerator. It all depends on what sound I am trying to achieve. Audulus looks like a great modular synth maker but it requires iOS 6 and I'm not ready to upgrade my iPad yet. I upgraded my iPod to iOS 6 and it stinks.
I'm not much of a keyboard player so I really enjoy using some the interesting alternative GUI MIDI controller apps. Orphion, Geo Synthesizer, Cantor, Chordion, and Musix Pro provide very unique and helpful ways of sending out MIDI to other apps for non traditional keyboard layout players. I also design my own interfaces on Beatsurfing and TouchOSC though TouchOSC requires a PC for customizing layouts.
Hopefully that narrows it down a bit for possible must have apps.
Good luck on what you chose to get.

I posted this but got no response. Not an app per se but a great thing that will run in your browser: http://www.hooktheory.com/analysis/view/leonard-cohen/hallelujahthis is the 'analysis' of Leonard Cohen's hallelujah There is ear training, and the understand of chord structure. I think it's worth a half an hour a day of time to check out the other songs they look at. as Peter says, "have fun...."

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
