In light of my recent issues with my USB interface, I am thinking of purchasing a delta 1010 card. I want to have the ability to track more than two tracks at a time. I don't need more than about 4 to 6 tracks . The questions are as follows:

1. If I have a delta 1010 I could track thru the inserts on the 4 mono channels of my Yamaha MG 12/4 mixer. Would it be a disadvantage to record this way pre fader?

2. Pros and cons with USB/ FireWire vs old fashioned PCI interfaces

Any and all thoughts welcomed

I'm not sure if the Delta 1010 PCI is still available to buy. You might get a second hand one. Thats the FIRST problem!

When I recently built myself a new desktop computer, it only had one PCI slot and some of the new motherboards have NO PCI slots. FireWire is disappearing off laptops as well.

You may be better off getting a Fast Track Ultra 8R if you need the 8 inputs and outputs. This is a USB 2.0 interface and works very well and being USB it will possibly survive a couple more computer generations before coming obsolete.

I bought a Gigabyte ZX77(?) mobo about a year ago with two PCI slots, so they are out there. But the point is well taken--they are disappearing fast, and apparently so has your card of choice. USB2 should serve your needs adequately.

For the same price as the Fast Track, you could get the new Focusrite Scarlett 18i20:

That would give you eight Focusrite pres, and they are fantastic.

My biggest worry is that while those with USB and for that part firewire interfaces talk glowingly about Pres and such just as many fuss over the USB drop off, and disconnects. USB would solve several problems. That of preamps, and space, such being an all in one solution. Nothing to me beats the comfort level of mixing on an old fashioned mixer board. Being able to bring in whatever i want. Plus it seems that i can get a better overall solution for multiple uses. For instance if i am recording i get very smooth levels, and if playing live music, i can toss the sound around better, to monitors and mains and such. When i used the Tascam i struggled to get the levels right either the mike input was low, or the mix to hot, one or the other.

Not arguing with the comments so far, just throwing out my observations so far.

I do know the 1010 is still out there and have found it as low as $159 still new in the package. But still you have valid points and how much longer PCI will be available is a concern. I just hate to pay $450 for an interface right now, and i am worried about driver issues and disconnects.

I always had a Delta 1010 interface and loved it. My friend also uses a Delta 1010 and loves his.I then sold mine.He had a new super computer built for him. It WAS Win 7 x 64.He updated the Delta to the latest drivers for that OS. He started to hate his Delta. He figured something was wrong with it so was going to buy something else. I had him send his Delta to me to test out. It worked/works great on my XP machine. In the mean time a Delta 101 became available for $125 on EBay so he took a chance and bought it.I had him get his computer guy to redo his super computer with XP.His NEW Delta works great and never falters and neither does the original one I got from him. Being that he's 700 miles away I can't be totally sure what was going on with thw Win 7 x 64 drivers but all points to them. I even did, and do every once in a while, Team Viewer session and I couldn't find anything he was doing wrong and I experienced during these session the same issues.

The 1010 might be "new" in the package, but the "newest" XP drivers (You're running XP- right?) available from M-Audio for the 1010 are 5 years old .

I have the Delta 44, and while it's a stable interface, the drivers have been problematic.

If you just want a way to get 8 inputs from your mixer into your computer, the 1010 will work. Just realize that M-Audio is obviously no longer supporting it with updated drivers.

John,

That Zoom only records 2 tracks simultaneously. He wants 6 or 8 track recording. Neat little box though.

Delta 1010lt released new drivers 3/15/2012
There's a reason XP drivers are 5 years old .. so is XP.

1010lt works in W7 on a couple machines here.

Can't say I like the new drivers better than the old, as they changed the way some features are accessed, but it still works and is a great deal for the need. Just know it's long in the tooth and will not be around for a long time (compared to some others).

I spent $500 on a Roland Rap-10 soundcard when they first came out, which was good for as long as ISA slots were around (not long). So it may be a value-over-time decision for you.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

will mull it over a tad more.

I think it is more important to get something - and commence working with it.

Try not to get hung up on the "paralysis of analysis" concerning these things, as the mean lifetime of such devices is dictated more by technology changes, OS changes, Motherboard and Chipset changes, etc.

Searching for the Holy Grail of sound devices is looking for unobtanium.

But some are much nice in sound and operation than others.

Check out the drivers, the drivers and also the drivers before committing.

You could do that with the Delta 44 as well. There's one on Ebay now. No Bids - $75.

yeah mac i get that. I have been down that rabbit hole before. I want something that i can settle into and use for the next 10 years, like the delta card has been for the last 10. SO i am leaning toward USB. Firewire seems to be slowly fading away, and the new things like thunderbolt not there yet, as far as support and such. I assume that USB will continue to grow with USB 3 getting more popular. I was happy with the Tascam US-800, but the drivers are horrible, and i can't rely on it. Like i said i do not need 32 tracks. 4 to 8 will do. So i guess in the name of being prepared for what i might need 8 is a good choice. The Tascam US-1800 i have been told is far better and very nicely priced, but to be honest i do not have any confidence in them. I am leaning toward an audiobox 1818 from Presonus. Everyone says focusrite, and i like them, but the USB versions are not rack mount, and I want it bolted down not just laying there.

When I need to rackmount a goodie that is not rackmountable, I use one of those rackmount shelves and fasten the goodie to it with adhesive hook and loop stuff.

This has even worked well for rigs I've designed for heavy road use. Use the super heavy duty pads for those.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
