I'm brand new to BIAB and the interface and options are a little overwhelming at first. Is there a way to tell BIAB to play my chords with alternate bass picking? (i.e.) On a G chord the four beats in a measure should be pick 6th, strum, pick 4th, strum.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not a guitarist and don't know a specific answer, but if you know the name of a popular artist or song in the style you want, you can search the styles by that name. Audition the styles and see if they work.

If there are none, you can put in a request on the Styles Wishlist thread.

Sounds like you are not really referring to the Bass instrument track here, as in Electric or Acoustic BASS, you are talking about the use of standard Guitar picking and which strings are used to create a bass pattern between strums.

We don't really have control over that in Band in a Box in a custom fashion. BUT, you may find a Style in which the guitar is picked in that fashion at times, or something near to it. Making a note of which actual Realtrack is used to invoke that desired picking style, you can then try invoking it on an empty track to play along with any of the other autoaccompaniment styles, or by itself. This would require auditioning styles inside the Stylepicker, with an ear towards the particular pattern, feel and tempo you are looking for.

Band in a Box accompaniments aren't designed to be able to nail exact notations, for the most part, although certain styles and instrument tracks will follow conventions commonly used that might be useful in more than one particular song situation. Those requiring custom patterns, hooks, etc. should resort to use of MIDI note entry methods to obtain an exact playing situation. That said, it may not be as necessary to have an exact replication in order to create a stunning sounding accompaniment for a particular song, for the reason that the RealTracks players used are pros at what they do and we can often find an accompaniment that will indeed work with a particular song very well indeed, but without nailing the exact picking or playing pattern that is in that song.

I'm not a Bass player but one of the "tricks" in BIAB when laying out chords is to put a / after a chord with the particular Bass note you want at that point. It doesnt always give you what you are looking for but I use it a lot and I hit 50/50.
For example, if you have the chord of G and want the Bass notes to be G and D in the bar try inputting G in the first half of the bar and then G/D in the second half. Its a bit of a Ball ache but if that works you might have to copy that concept into every bar, changing the / note as you want it, to force the note.
It might also be a good idea to check the RealTrack Bass track you are using to see if it has a "simple" flag available as that might make it easlier to "force" the note you want.
Worth a Try??
cheers
Ian

You might try the style _BG_BAND. Isolate the guitar using the mixer/volume solo function.

If you're looking for the "boom-chic" type of fingerpicking, made popular by Merle Travis
you should try out these...

Peter,What Surly Guitar may be asking for is a simple flat top type style patterned after early Merl Haggard songs. To be exact (Today I Started Loving You Again). I would order 2013.5 today if you would see to that request. -----Leon

Hmmm. I don't see that style when I list all styles. I have BIAB 2013.

I'll play around some more. It appears that to get what I am looking for I may have to record my own guitar parts.

Mac is correct.

What Surley is referring to is the "alternate bass string" or "boom-chick" style of guitar playing.

Surly Guitar, No you will not find a style like the one used so often in country music from the 20's thru present, because it is not included so far. My version of BIAB has 3,363 styles. I use maybe 20 or 30 of those. But that's just me. Nothing fancy is required to create a simple pick, strum pick, strum. A strong voice, such Merl Haggard has can be up front in a recording, not colored by too much of this and that. But like I said , that is just me.---------Leon

You must have bought extra styles? BIAB 2013 only has 677, or at least that is the number listed after "All Styles".

I have the 2013 UltraPlus pak which includes a total of 3363 styles. The guitar in style _BG_BAND has the 6th-strum-4th-strum typical of bluegrass rhythm guitar and even includes some believable runs. Sorry I can't tell you what extra pak you need to obtain this style. Maybe someone else can assist?...cheers!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
