After watching eight hours of the new History Channel's Viking series yesterday (missed the first episode, dang it) and watching the 1958 rendition of the movie "The Vikings" today, I want to change up my normal rock/pop style of making music to reflect this style of music just for fun. I searched the net for Viking music and found quite a few gems in the process.

I am away from my BIAB PC right now and was wondering if anyone could point in the right direction of which BIAB styles would be close to this Viking music? Many sites claim it is along the lines of Norwegian, Scandinavian, Celtic, etc.

This is way out of my musical style and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Nobody knows what real viking music sounded like. They had no notation and all their CDs are out of print. Abba doesnt count.

If I were aiming at music suitable for the invasion and pillaging of unsuspecting coastal villages, I would open the BB folder, then "Artist Performance Sets," then "Artist Performance Set 3 - Celtic..."
Listen to all the songs, try the styles they use. Try simplifying the melodies. Leave out the 4ths and 7ths.

Also look in your BB folder and see if you have a folder named "Folk Songs." This came free with certain generations of BiaB install sets. Lots of Celtic-type stuff there.

In the Soloist track, pencil in some pairs of long pedal notes as roots and fifths. A little like a bagpipe, p'raps.

Got back home and couldn't find the "Artist Performance Sets" as you suggested but searched for Celtic styles and enjoyed quite a few. Also no "Folk Songs" folder as you suggested have been found. BTW, I am using BIAB 2012 UltraPlusPAK.

The biggest problem I am coming across is a matter I mentioned here on the forums many moons ago. Finding a style I like, loading and saving the file, I have to click 7 times to get back to the folder I last saved into. I'm dealing with it now but it sure seems like BIAB should save to the last folder saved to instead of going through the 7 clicks.

Anyhow, some of the Celtic styles I have listened to are giving me several useful ideas.

Thanks a lot for your help.

The Artist Performance Sets come with BiaB 2013. These represent a whole nother set of new capabilities for BiaB. If you have v2013, call tech support and ask where they are.

The Folk Song showed up as a freebie with the BiaB install of a few years ago. Not even sure which year anymore...

There's a load different styles of Scandinavian music. Very popular in the northern areas of Scotland & the Shetland islands. The Vikings left a huge legacy of cultures particularly in Shetland. Many of the older islanders hate to be called Scottish. There's a wonderful fire festival in Shetland each January and they have a longship built every year. Have a look on you tube for Up-Helly-Aa I've been to three of the festivals and they're outstanding. If you have Spotify do a search for Norwegian or Scandinavian music. I can give you an idea for tunes & songs to get started if you wish.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
