When it was time for me to render a song, I would just hit the .WAV icon button. The Render screen would popup and I always selected Re-Render since I always use my Ketron SD2. I hadn't done this for awhile and the last time I tried I got the message that I need to have a DXi synth selected (in a different popup window). To get the Render Window, I had to go to the drop down Audio menu. Is this a new change?

... if I recall correctly the synth has been a necessity for some time. I remember calling BB support the first time I tried to work with the program. It needs a synth to render and play the music..... real band too IIRC.

I like to use TTS so its the one loaded for my programs.

I render with it all the time. How do I know that? Because the blue light on the sd2 blinks while the song is being rendered. I have to use the re-render button. I don't try to render to mp3 since I like to use db poweramp for a better sampling rate and quality. I have TTS in sonar, but I use the Ketron in it while working with the midi tracks if I don't finish the song in BIAB. I was just curious why the .wav button doesn't work the same as in the past.

Just set up TTS as the default synth in BB and in RB. You will be able to render.

The blue LED blinks because MIDI data is being sent to it.

BUT the sounds you hear in the finished audio file are the sounds that whatever DXi synth you are using for the fast render and cannot be the sounds of the Ketron hardware synth.

The only way to put the Ketron sounds on the audio file is to arm the Audio Track to record from your soundcard's Line Input after connecting the Audio Outputs of the Ketron to those Line Inputs, then push Record and allow the entire Band in a Box performance to play back from beginning to end.

You've been listening to songs in those audio files that are the MIDI sounds of your DXi software synth.

I'm not using a sound card. My midi input and output drivers selected are both UA-4fx. The DXi box in the midi driver's window is not checked. All I do is select "render midi to stereo .wav file" from the Audio menu and choose the re-render option. If it's using a soft synth to render, I have no idea which one it might be. Anyway, the sound quality sounds the same as the SD2 to me.

Oops! I forgot to mention the method I'm using to render is slow.

Never been able to render. You are confusing render with something else.Or as Mac stated you are rendering through the installed soft synth of some kind not the SD2 HW synth. Can't be done.
Of course you have some sort of sound card or you couldn't hear any audio.

Well, I just don't know then. Mac says fast render, but I guarantee you that it's slow. Bottom line is that I'm just happy that it works and I end up with a decent .wav file to work with. That being said, sometimes I'm not happy with my mix and I go back and drag the midi tracks into Sonar to futz with some more.

Where do you have the Audio Outputs of your Ketron connected?

Hi Mac. Gary Curran helped me get stuff going some years ago now. I think it goes like this:

usb: from ua-4fx to usb cpu
midi: from ua-4fx to sd2
audio from sd2 to ua-4fx
audio from ua-4fx to speakers

Due to my space constrictions, the cables are sort of hard to get to.

I've had it set up like this for a long time and I keep my fingers crossed that the equip. will just keep going. With this setup, I've been able to use the sd2 in Sonar also. I will thank you again for recommending the sd2. It's sure worth every penny.

So what you're doing is just recording the audio from the SD2 back into the computer via the ua-4fx in real time however this is not rendering.

I'm obviously confused since I'm just looking at the end results. The BIAB screen says it's rendering so that's probably why I thought that it was.

Thanks for your input.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
