I am having SERIOUS problems installing my Tascam US-122 on my freshly re-installed Vista Business 64bit machine. I have gone to the Tascam website and downloaded the drivers and tried every which way to install. Nothing wrong with the hardware. This is a Vista Business 64bit problem. It demands a 'digitally signed' driver (even though it comes direct from Tascam's own site.
I also find Vista Business 64bit HIGHLY irritating in its unfriendly attitude to me.
Am I going to have to go back and reinstall Vista 32bit?
Madness
All replies and advice MUCH appreciated. Thank you

Hi Sam. It's been a long time since I used Vista, and I never used 64-bit Vista as it was somewhat experimental at the time. My memory is that 32-bit Vista was known to be far more stable.
Does Vista allow you to right-click on an EXE install file and specify you should run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP? If so, try that.
I highly recommend you go to Windows 7 for 64-bit operation. Windows 8 is slightly better but there are still a few annoyances with drivers (but the solution is often compatibility mode, as mentioned above).
Finally, don't get me started on Tascam and its failure to update some of its drivers. However, there is a newer version of that 122, the 122MKII, that does have current support, so Tascam can be forgiven a little for abandoning the older model. Which model do you have?
Best of luck.

don't get me started on Tascam and its failure to update some of its drivers. Ha....truth. Tascam, for some time, has had a less than stellar reputation for the above. OP....have you tried any of the MS forums re: your issue? That is a shot from the hip but I've occasionally found tidbits of knowledge/fixes when perusing the forums on a problem. I'm little help but hope you get it figured out. Carry on....

Sam, while you may not be able to afford a new OS, that one, is about as far removed from typical as possible.
TASCAM = the evil driver empire, in my opinion. They have a nearly unusable Windows 7 64 bit driver for their US-800 product. They simply discontinued selling the product instead of releasing a driver that does not have a memory leak - which the 'latest' driver has.
I will never buy another TASCAM product ever again. The fact that they charge users for access to their official user forum is another reason for my refusal to ever patronize that company again.
If anyone can help you here it's KeithS He is a moderator on the aforementioned forum. I would send him a PM to see if he can offer up any assistance.

Sam,
It's good to see you back. I've been wondering where you were.
I have been running a TASCAM US-224 Audio/MIDI/Control Service on Vista Home Premium x64 for several years with no issues, so 64-bit isn't the problem. It has been a good and stable OS for me. I was a bit surprised because I had heard so much negative about it, but that's my experience.
Try the compatibility hack that Mick suggested. Also, wait for someone else to chime in. I believe there's a way to bypass that signature requirement.

Richard,
Sam is using a US-122. The US-224 is an entirely different beast; control surface etc.
I would be very surprised if it used the same drivers and if '64 bit isn't the problem'.
If there were no issues amongst the US-family with drivers, then TASCAM would not have dropped the US-800 like a hot potato and kept the rest of the line alive for 2+ more years.
TASCAM anagrams into SCAT AM, and SCAM AT. I normally don't go for kicking company names around like they are turds, but in this case, I think it is deserving - though I do not fault them for not having a functioning Vista 64 bit driver.
I DO fault them for not having a usable Win 7 64 bit driver for their US-800. Instead of working on a driver, they fire-sale priced the interface and I was one of the stupid customers that should have known better. Even just using the thing to watch YouTube will disable it once the memory leak gets too big.

As an equal opportunity forum user, I would like to interrupt the Tascam bashing, however deserved, with one correction. Tascam does not charge to be on their user forum, because Tascam HAS no user forum. It is run by dedicated users, and they are the ones who ask for a modest charge. There is much valuable info posted by us, and I agree, KeithS is a most valuable resource. So is DeeringAmps, aka Tom Deering. Anything he writes or collects is good stuff.
Keith, Tom and I even started a temporary Tascam user forum when the prior one went missing. The current forum has archived most if not all of some good reference material all of us have prepared.
Of course, if Tascam has no user forum, we can bash them for just that.
Back to your regular programming.

Yeah i have a US-800 and guess what it is in a box in the garage! freakin thing does not support anything after XP. I have a shiney new Presonus 1818VSL works like a rock with Win 7 64 bit! The US 122 was before the US-800 i believe, so it most likely is a driver thingy.
Sam if you do not have access to win 7 roll back to vista 32.

Sam if you do not have access to win 7 roll back to vista 32. I'd skip Vista entirely and go back to XP. XP works fine. Vista seldom worked at all.

-Scott Duh. My sole purpose in commenting was to observe that I have a TASCAM device that worked in XP and is now running on a stable 64-bit Vista system. Maybe I said too much. I had to buy a new interface for my Windows 7 DAW because I couldn't find drivers that worked for the US-224. I have had great experience with pre-PC TASCAM hardware in the past, but all points are taken regarding any of their more recent products involving software. I now use a Presonus AudioBox USB (which I recommend to Sam, if he's still reading. It's small, rugged, stable, and relatively inexpensive). R.

Yeah i hear ya on that one bud, but the question is why put up with the aggravation. My Tascam did have pretty clean sound, but i was shocked how much better the Presonus sounds, and how far superior it is in both stability and also the driver software is not only flexible, but actually allow you to enhance the experience.
I use it as a processor of sorts, using the fat channel setting on both vocals and some instruments.
Being able to right in the driver software add reverb, delay, compression, noise gate, filter, and such is huge.
In the two months i have had the unit it has drop out and needed a reboot only once, and it was my fault i turned it off briefly to re route some cabling. I sometimes lost connection with my Tascam on a regular basis if i ran it long, or pushed it hard. I had actually went back to my old M-Audio 2496 card for a while, then on a whim bought the Presonus. WOW what a difference it makes.

Glad the PreSonus is working for you. I had a FireBox, that when my Firewire equipped laptop died, it rendered it a bit useless to me as firewire equipped lappys are nearly non-existent these days - well, at reasonable prices.
that's when I bought the US-800. The rest of the US-x00 product line lived for several years, but the US-800 disappeared from the market in the fire sale that you and I bought in (got it for $99 from Musician's Friend, correct?). The price should have warned me that there was something wrong - as the lower channel count versions were selling for more than double that price.
I might go for the lower end Audiobox.

To some degree, Tascam's driver issues have been MS Windows issues. I personally stopped using the US-428 and switched to the FW-1884 because of driver problems (the us-122 uses the same driver as the us-428).
In a nutshell, if you can get the driver to install and stick, then it works, as long as you can put up with Windows hanging up on shut if you leave your us-122 turned on. Turn it off and there is no problem.
But the rub is getting the driver to stick. The problem being that the us driver is not signed for some of the windows systems. There was a way to get windows to take an unsigned driver, but Redmond did a patch that made Windows kick the unsigned driver even if you were able to trick it into loading it at first.
The signature on the various us drivers was done by Frontier, the designer of the us-122.
I'll do some searching and see if I can remind myself what the trick was to get Vista to accept an unsigned driver. I don't think it works any longer but it's probably worth a try.

Thanks for the input, guys. I also posted this on a techie website and have not had one single answer there.
I am not in a position to buy new gear. Besides, the US-122 meets my needs more than adequately. It always has.
Question is: what is the best solution? The HP EliteBook 8730w shipped with Vista 64bit loaded and also with OEM disks for Vista 32bit and XP Pro. I originally uninstalled 64 and replaced it with XP as I had no experience with 64.
1: Find a solution to Vista 64bit's driver acceptance problem? 2: Downgrade to Vista 32bit? 3: Downgrade to XP Pro?
What are the real advantages and disadvantages of each OS?

'Downgrading to XP Pro' from Vista of any sort is an oxymoron, IMO.

Sam, I'll say it again. I've been using Vista Home Premium x64 since 2009. Whatever others say, my experience has been good. If the 64-bit version is causing problems, then go with 32.
Unless, you never, ever, ever plan to go on the internet with this machine, I'd stay away from XP. It is at the end of its service life. Microsoft will shortly stop issuing security updates, leaving it vulnerable to all kinds of nasties. If you have a separate PC for the innerwebz, then go ahead with XP on your laptop. Just make sure to get it completely up to date in case they take everything down at Microsoft.com.
You're doing the right thing by being cautious. You know the saying: "Measure twice and cut once."

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
