Orwell 1984 would be proud. Kinda reminds me of the short lived series "Max Headroom". I hope some of the 5000 people laid off from MS have something to do with songsmith

Thanks for sharing. I guess it's not fair to test Songsmith like that, but ah, need to have another look...

I must recant my smarmy comment about SongSmith. We have a old upright piano in our church that never sounded very good. Today we had a guest pianist play both the Roland keyboard and the upright, both sounded great. It really is in what you do with the tools you have.

What I don't get about this thing is, where/how are they getting the isolated vocal tracks? I hear none of the original background accompaniment. Is the available vocal isolation software that good?

Or am I missing something obvious (as usual).

I know the feelin', bro.

Like when ole Ray Charles used ta sit down at the beat up old Spinet and say, "They's a few good notes ah-lef' innit!" -- and then play the crap outta the thing.

"Iff'n its gotta bad note, don't hit that 'un..."

Easier said than done.

I think the value of Songsmith is not so much that you can take the cheesiest of styles and create something like in those videos. It's the fact that it can figure out a somewhat decent chord progression based merely upon you singing a melody line. Once you have your chord progression, you can take it from there using other tools.

You probably wouldn't use it to try to have it get the right chord progression of an existing popular song, because there are too many ways you can go. But if you have a melody running through your head and don't have a clue about wrapping an arrangement around it, this is a pretty simple way to get you started.

Or, there's just the old fashioned way...

I think too many people are looking for the holy grail of song creation. You know, you just click "create" and voila, you now have the next hit song that you can fully credit yourself with.

I think Songsmith is merely a tool that will fit certain needs at times. It's not a tool you use all the time, but I can see some benefit to it (even if it's making someone laugh by watching one of those videos).

I find that it is a decent idea generator.

I'm not really a songwriter, my skills are more in the solo improvisation, performance, and arranging departments.

When I do attempt to write songs, my fingers tend to fall into the same patterns that they have fallen into by playing pop music all my life. The Songsmith, while it doesn't create a finished product IMHO, does create chords that are out of my box. Then I can refine it from there and substitute and enhance chords.

I only wish it would convert the melody to MIDI for export along with the rest.

I read somewhere that pgmusic had a hand in the making of Songsmith, is this true?

The Songsmith styles are just PG Music BiaB styles. Copy some of those BiaB styles to the appropriate Songsmith folder -> they show up immediately in Songsmith and they work.

OK - I wondered if there was some cross-pollination going on. Those count-ins on the examples posted by the OP immediately made me think of some of the BIAB generated music I've heard posted here years ago.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
