I've been following the "BAIB is hard" thread and I suppose this is my contribution. With 11 or 12 years experience I should know how to do this, but I don't!

I have a song with the regular halfnotes 120 bass. This lopes along fine for most of the song, but the middle 8 (actually 16 bars) needs a more insistent regular 8 to the bar so I've tried using the metal bass 120 (which the blurb suggests can be used in this sort of way). Fine as far as it goes, but try as I might, I can't get it to play the root for 16 bars - it always introduces a little slide or something similar which is fine in the middle of an AC/DC song but kind of kills a Tim McGraw song. Is there any way of persuading the metal bass to just play the root - the beat is fine, it's just the notes it plays.

I'm now getting to the point of acutally considering getting my Jazz bass out of the cupboard for the first time in a year or so and actually using it on the song - but I don't want to admit defeat just yet. I could also just cut and paste individual bars or pairs of bars to make 16 bars from scraps, but I've kind of got to the point of obsession about this!

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Best wishes

Brian

Brian, are we talking about Real Bass here, or a MIDI bass track? If it's Real Bass, I don't think you can quite get what you want, at least not yet. If it's MIDI, then you can try either using slash chords or pedal bass, or copy the bass track to the Melody or Soloist track and edit it to play exactly the notes you want. If you need help with any of that, let us know.

Real bass, is sliced and diced bass wave files, it does not change patterns much, or follow midi.

I haven't tried it yet, but can you put the chord in 4 times per measure and get it to just play the root? As in:
G,G G,G. I'm no expert but I thought I would at least make the suggestion. It might affect the other instruments adversely, so you may have to have just a bass file that you export separately.

Many thanks for the help. I'm fine with the midi side - it was a song originally done with midi instruments and reworked to realtracks (to its benefit). The original track was done with two different styles which gave the different bass patterns. It was really the real bass side I was wondering about.

Best wishes

Thanks for the suggestion - it seems to work! Of course, the same approach works to get just root chords in a lot of midi-based styles, so it is logical it should work with real tracks too ...

Provided the chords are vanilla "F", "G" or whatever the real bass just plays the root nearly all the time. The original had a bar of "Dm7" and even entering 4 "Dm7"s in the bar gave variations in the pattern. Changing this to "D" worked fine - given the I was exporting the bass to Sonar, the fact that everything else also played "D" not "Dm7" is irrelevant.

You win today's gold star!

Best wishes

You can get it to sound right inside of BIAB by typing in slash chords. Ex: Dm7/D will force the bass to play only D while the upper instruments play the Dm7 chord.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
