Hi Gang

I bought BIAB last Friday, and today I tried having a go at writing something, just to see how it sounded.

I have done the first verse of Danny Boy,and played my guitar as the melody.

My question is to me the backing seems a bit dull and lifeless,I suppose I could try some EQ,but then again it might be my fault.

So if you would have a quick listen and let me know what you think please.

Thanks

Alan

Over all very nice,

But.... your guitar is way too bright to fit in the mix, or as you suggest the backing is too dull. This is a common problem that I also have at time. So the backing is too muddy. Try to remove the strumming guitar - or brighten it up with high end EQ. Ideally we would want to feel that the band was all together when recording. In this case it don't feel that way. Is the backing bass and guitar midi? If so what synth are you using to voice them. So for drums.

Thanks jazzmandan

The backing is all real style,a country backing with the Steel guitar removed,no midi.

I am in a way glad you agree it is a bit muddy, now I know I can add some EQ.

Thanks
Alan

Alan,

I would suggest that rather than "add" EQ, that you subtract EQ, namely the low mids. That will cut the muddiness without the track getting shrill. EQ is basically a volume control for specific frequencies, and it's always better to cut than add. Try cutting around 250-500 Hz. a few dBs and see if that helps.

Regards,

Bob

Good job on Danny Boy. I agree with Jazzmandan but would suggest also that in addition to lowering the level of your lead guitar in the mix and doing some eq on the tracks that you experiment with the panning and volume levels of the BIAB tracks and if you have the ability to do so, maybe add an effect such as reverb or delay to one or more of the BIAB tracks. This will create more depth and spatial separation in the BIAB backing track.

Adding chords to the song can also help. Add some sevenths, major sevenths or minors to cause Biab to create a more complex and interesting backing track. In some cases, the more complicated the chart, the more realistic and dynamic the tracks become. Not always the case but it may be something to experiment with.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
