Hello,

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to set up patch changes going to instruments on a VSTi? I would specifically like to enter data on the melody track to be played by a guitar patch early on in the piece and a vibraphone later on. My workaround has been using an audio track, but a patch change would be a much more elegant solution. I am using Kontakt Player 2 as a VSTi with the Garritan Jazz and Big Band. I do not own Bandstand, which I understand resolves this issue of patch changes on a VST instantiation.

Also, I seem to be losing my metronome while using Real Drums patterns even with all click preferences enabled. Is it possible to run a Real Drums pattern and click at the same time?

in case my signature doesn't show it, Windows XP with BIAB 2008.5

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Gerhard

Hi

This is one of the problems using JB&BB ,its not easy i think it can be done using Kontact Script and there is a chap who gets on this forum but i can`t remember the chaps name or user name, you can`t do it easy like when you use a soft synth like Coyote forte or creative soundcards

The following link is to the to the multi & script Dave referred to

PMPM JABB GM Multi

It allows you to change instruments with Program Change messages documented in the download

You also have to first download & install the PMPM at the bottom of the link in my signature

Is it not correct that this will only work if all the instruments have been loaded into ram? I have followed your scripts with interest but I don't think they address this specific problem. If the patch change requires Kontakt to load a sample then it can't work because Biab is already playing in real time. That has always been the problem with trying to use sample based VSTi's and is the reason the only synths that do work seamlessly with Biab are relatively small ones like the VSC or Forte. Their samples are small enough to load into ram so they are instantly accessable. It's been suggested that the cure for this is for Biab to allow multiple midi channels for the same instrument track so if you have a patch change on the piano track for example going from acoustic to electric the program can look ahead and load that second patch in time to play it. This has only been a forum suggestion, AFAIK no one is working on this problem.
One of the many reasons to use Real Band instead of Biab. Whatever instruments you want to use can be generated on separate tracks and midi channels.

Various and different software based MIDI output devices can exhibit various and different problems.

Ever since I started using the Ketron SD2 hardware module I've enjoyed being able to do the things asked about here, plus have enjoyed simply excellent sounding MIDI instruments.

Bob,

Yes All instruments must be loaded in the K2 Player

From the documentation
The JABB GM Phrase Modeled Performance Multi adds a level of General Midi
capability to the Garritan Jazz & Big Band Library. The Multi will respond to Program
Change values routing subsequent notes to the appropriate channel of the K2 Player to
sound the corresponding instrument. The JABB GM Multi uses the Saxophone KS
instruments translating program change messages to key switches to play the flute,
clarinet and soprano sax samples. The multi adds a key switched Guitar, Bass, Piano &
Drums allowing switching between the Jazz and Acoustic Guitars, Upright, Arco,
Fingered, and Fretless Basses, Concert Grand and Rhodes pianos and GM Sticks and
Brush Drum Sets. The Multi also includes a Brass Section Patch consisting of the
Trumpet 5 KS Lite & Trombone 3 KS Lite instruments for use as the Brass Section GM
patch.

Hi again,

I'm very happy with what the phrase modeling does for the expression parameters for monophonic instruments. Cool!

I can't get the patch/key switching to work, and I think I've tried just about everything (CC0 and patch changes as necessary according to the chart, and with instruments residing on specified channels from the supported GM patches list. I have put the .pat file in my BB folder. Is this right? Have opened it with the "plus" arrow next to the volume/pan controls. Not really sure if I am supposed to and what to do here. Am a little unclear on exactly where everything should reside. Any ideas?

And I checked out the Ketron2 demos. Wow...

Looks great so far. Thanks for any input. Great users' forum.

Hi Gerhard,

*Does the patchmap you tried to use match the MIDI synth you have invoked?

You may be trying to invoke Upper Bank patches for a completely different synth and the synth you are really using doesn't recognize those bank changes...

Gerhard,

Make sure you're using the PMPM JABB GM Multi as it has the JABB instruments loaded on the correct K2Player channels. You really don't need the .pat file the main instruments should change according to patch change messages from the default drop down in BIAB. This allows changing instruments in the bar setting dialog etc as well as the main screen. The definitions in the .pat file are for the alternate flutes and clarinets and additional mutes (cup. bucket, straight and plunger) for the brass.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
