I have purchased a new laptop WIN 8.1 with plenty of hard drive space. Previously I have been running BIAB from the external hard drive on an older VISTA os. With the new faster laptop is there any advantage to putting the entire programme now on the laptop ie installation 1 or 3? I have BIAB 2015 everything pak.

IMHO... not really.

All the tracks and files will still need to be loaded to memory....

A faster lappy will get the files loaded from wherever they are stored. Unless the lappy is a dedicated music machine..... I'd run it from the external drive..... It's amazing how fast those internal HD's will fill up.

You can always try the external method..... if you don't like it or it takes too long to load files, you can always go back and take the time to install the files on the internal drive.

The quick install takes about 5 minutes.... installing on the internal for a full install takes over an hour....at least it did for me.

On my studio DAW, I have 2 internal HD's and 1 external back up.... 2.5TB total..... I did load BB/RB into the drive because it's just a music computer..... nothing else, and not connected to the internet.

On my Dell vista lappy, I ran it from the PG HD..... no problems there. I no longer use the Dell for recording.

This is the first year I'm running BIAB from the USB HD. Previously on the internal HD. I find it takes 1:02 for BIAB to start / load up (USB HD), after that no difference. Still that load up time bugs me. I'm a bit short of HD space but I'm tempted to go for the 20 MB option.

Win 10, 64 bit, love my Lenovo T420, BIAB 2019 (613), RB 2019 (2)

Short term memory is getting shorter.

If it's a new laptop, it probably has USB3 interfaces. You could install BIAB to a USB3 external drive and get pretty good performance. 2TB portable drives (where it gets its power from the laptop) can be had for less than $100.

Hi novice,

The one advantage of loading everything on your internal hard drive is that the USB drive becomes a program backup in the case of a computer meltdown. Other than that, the USB drive is a very convenient way to run the program.

With the above in mind, my advice is ... If you choose to run the program from the USB drive, buy a second USB drive and make a backup copy of the PG Music drive.

Regards,
Noel

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
