No joking, I overheard a discussion that got me thinking.

What is the title given to the person who decides in a song to, as an example, add tambourine on 2 and 4 in the second verse, and shaker in the bridge kind of thing.

Please don't say a "percussionist" or something like that wink

Arranger, orchestrator, etc...

Just curious your thoughts.

Thanks! smile

Good answers so far. Even if I'm one or both of the above, I leave that to the individual musician. But I'm playing jazz, where the spontaneity is valued.

The producer is the one who normally decides what kind of production chops go into a song project. This normally entails decisions on instrumentation as well as dynamics where a song may drop back from a full band to a simple vocal with an acoustic guitar and then back to the band for the ending, vocals/harmonies, any effects that are used, and even structure of the song.

Bands often make this a corporate process. Solo artists, or their labels, often hire well known, skilled and expericnced producers to make the magic happen for them. Often, we, in the home recording business, don't have either option available to us, so we are left to our own devices, imagination, and skills.

Thanks for the replies. I know what I have called them, but in hearing the conversation there is some overlap of definitions and job expectations.

There also seems to be some things that apply to one term but not the others.

I summed it up to them by saying, "it would seem the producer wears many hats. That's actually not the case. They wear one hat. And it's a crown."

Depends on what else they play.

If a person who can play vibes, drums, and other assorted percussion instruments decides to play the tambourine and/or shaker I call him/her a percussionist.

If the sax player picks up the tambourine and plays it when there is no sax part, I still call him/her a sax player.

If the sax player also plays many percussion instruments like marimba, trap kit, etc., I'll call him/her a multi-instrumentalist.

If the producer decides to put cowbell in there, I'll still call him/her a producer and might add one who makes some creative suggestions.

I started out as a drummer but quickly switched and became a sax player. But being in a rock band required me to wear many hats. So I'd pick up the tambourine, shaker, etc. Probably the first 'other' instrument was bass. The bass player in an early band was also a guitarist, so on those non-sax songs he'd show me the bass line and he'd play second guitar. Then came keys, guitar and toys (shaker, cowbell, etc.)

It wasn't until I got good at the bass, guitar, and keyboard that I considered myself a multi-instrumentalist. But while playing the toys, I never considered myself a percussionist, even though I can actually play drums.

In music, it's so hard to label a lot of things and people.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
