Hello from a relative newbie, so please excuse the ignorant computer question.

I have just ordered my 2016 UltraPlus Pak USB Hard Drive upgrade. I chose the hard drive version because I am using only my 286GB Lenovo laptop and I was concerned about the upgrade taking up too much memory on my laptop and slowing it down. My question is whether I need to uninstall my 2015 version that is on my laptop before I begin running the upgrade on the hard drive? I realize I should keep any songs I have now in a separate folder to use with the new program.

Any other pertinent advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

It is better to install 2016 over your 2015 version. According to what I've seen elsewhere on the forum when this question comes up, that is always the recommendation. Installing 2016 without uninstalling 2015 retains any of the bonus material you may have purchased.

I only have 70GB of memory left on my laptop hard drive. Will the upgrade take up all of that space? Thanks.

I've not upgraded yet and don't know the size of the install. When you install, you will be given several choices including an installation that is minimal to your computer and runs BB and RB from the portable hard disk drive.

The bulk of the new material is the new RealTracks/RealDrums. The other downloads will generally overwrite existing files, so it's mostly a wash.

I just looked and the aggregate size of the new RealTrack installers I 5.7GB. Assuming there is compression in the installers (but realizing that most of the content is already compressed WMA files), I suspect at most you would be adding about 8GB to your hard drive once fully installed. So with 70GB left, you should be fine.

While the new BIAB 2016 might only take up a few more GB's of total HDD space (as John indicates maybe 8GBs) I would want to know how much your current 70Gb's of free space is OUT OF?

Is that 70GB's out of 150 or 250 GB's (an good to OK situation) or is that 70 GBs out of 1 or 2 TB's (that would NOT be a good situation)?

Even SOLID STATE drives need some room to "breath" and on regular HDD's need at least %10 free space (unless you simply enjoy problems).

Replacing those ridiculously small capacity internal laptop HDD is USUALLY a fairly inexpensive and easy task. Expect for the really small 1.8" form factor drives (usually only found in netbooks) - the biggest of those is only 250GB's I think (I have scrap files bigger than that - LOL)

Good luck
Larry

Larry's concern is correct. I've read that the minimum to avoid hard drive thrashing (swapping of virtual memory) is 15% of the total space. Regardless of the exact number, the principle he cites is valid.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
