Hey,
Im using windows 7. I note when I use one audio program, or DAW -- it seems to cause all others to go dead.
Then I cant figure out how to get the others audible again.
Know what I mean?
anyone solved this? This common problem must have a solution. Is there some software that controls / easily routes this problem?
thanks

This may or may not be your problem: If you are using ASIO, then you can only use one audio program at a time. Try selecting MME in each program and see if they play nicely together. Also, sometimes one app will latch onto the ASIO driver and not release when closing the app, so you don't get audio in the next app.
When I run BIAB and RealBand together, I generally set one (or both) to MME, and can play in either of them. It won't work if both are set to ASIO. Of course, by doing so, I incur MIDI latency if I'm recording from my keyboard; but otherwise, they work pretty well. Some VSTi's want to use ASIO exclusively, so sometimes this is not an option.
The first thing to try is to only open one app at a time, and make sure the previous app is completely closed before opening a new one.
(NOTE: Yes, I know there are workarounds for multi-program ASIO, but they have their own issues).

To add to John's explanation I have BiaB, Realband, Audacity and a couple of media players all on MME. I can run all of them at the same time. I don't but I can. Note that I do not record in RealBand.
I have my DAW, Sonar, on ASIO drivers. Thus I can have Sonar running while BiaB and/or the other MME programs running simultaneously.
I have the stand-a-lone Kontakt on ASIO so I can play sounds on it with no latency. But I can not run stand-a-lone Kontakt and Sonar at the same time. ASIO can only run one program at a time.
As John said "(NOTE: Yes, I know there are workarounds for multi-program ASIO, but they have their own issues)."
I hope this helped.

There are some programs that simply lock onto your sound card, and others that have an option to release it or share it. John alluded to this. You have to look for such a setting in each of the programs you want to try to share.

You could try going to Control Panel - Sound - then right click on the sound device and select Properties, then Advanced and de-select "Exclusive Mode". Repeat this for the Recording section as well.

There is also a Steinberg multi-ASIO; however, my experience is that it gets tricky if you have multiple audio outputs.

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
