Hi, I had dropped the drum volume on a song and I noticed that the count in also drops too low to properly hear it while the drums seemed okay to me. So I found the BIAB 2016 "options, preferences, Count-In/Met, Audible Lead-in, Volume" value and I changed it to 100 hoping it would increase the count in volume while the drum volume was adjusted down. It appears to have no effect on the count in volume (all the settings on this dialog box are default). I also tried setting the volume to value "2" as an extreme test and it had no impact (only adjusting the drum volume effects the count in volume). Is this suppose to be like this? When when does this volume actually do something?

If count in volume is ever separated from drum volume it would probably need to be a fader on the mixer screen because it is too slow to go through all these options.

Thanks,
John

P.S. I just changed both of these site preferences to yes (the top one was set to no before) Hopefully I now start getting emails by default for the replies to the threads on this site.

John, try setting your count-in to either an A, B style. Go to options, countin/met, play lead in ....etc. I use the fills myself as shown in the picture.

Lead count in.

Hi Mario, Thanks for the suggestion. I tried what you suggested and a few other things. It does not work. If I mute the drums or take the slider to zero volume none of the count in types can be heard. I tried it with a midi style as well and it still does not work. The other checkbox "Lead-in drum count if drums muted/disabled" also does not seem to work. I would say there is a bug. Actually it may be a feature that fall through the cracks which is sort of a bug (they never had time to get to it in the todo list). I think I have one patch to install which I have not had time to put in yet. Maybe there is a fix in that.

Yeah, it is a problem. If you drop the drum volume you certainly don't want to drop the lead in. They really are separate items.

MIDI or RealDrums? I suspect that the setting probably works for MIDI countin (that then go to MIDI drums), but probably not for RealDrums. Unfortunately, I'm not at my music machine to try it out.

Thanks John,

after you suggested that I noticed that the mixer shows "RealDrums=JazzBrushes". So I guess it is real drums and midi everything else. We learn something every day :-) Unfortunately when I changed the drum track to "Instrument: 1 standard drum kit" it still does not work. I tried Mario's suggestion again with this new drum track and it still does not work. I set the volume to 100 and took the drum slider right down to zero and no count in.

Hi,

If you're using RealDrums then most of the count-in settings won't do anything as they're for MIDI drums. The count-in's volume isn't adjustable independently at this time.

However, if you want a louder count-in, you could increase the overall volume of the Drums track using the mixer, then use a Bar Settings change on bar 1 to decrease the Drums volume to a more reasonable level.

Thanks
Kent

Thanks Kent. That worked. I changed the drum level directly on bar 1 so there is no period where the drums are heard at the normal slider setting. I reduced the drums by -10. I put it back to a standard count in type. John

To add more mud;

Realdrums are Audio.
Many of us get used to the count-in happening as MIDI, but if using Realdrums, the Intro can actually be generated Audio, not MIDI, so once you realize this difference it makes sense.

Metronome = MIDI

A perceived 'Count-in' could be either, depending on whether it is a Realdrum (audio track) or sent as a MIDI signal.
Most of the Metronome/Count-in features in the menu deal with MIDI only.

Audio is a different animal. You may hear it and think it is a 'Count-in' or 'Metronome' (and effectively it is), but it really isn't; it is actually a generated Audio track, so the MIDI based options do not really apply (except for certain MIDI control changes, but that's the next more complex level, and these types of controls are not found in the basic Metronome menus).

That's what complicates things for many users .. MIDI *can* control the Audio volume if you want (more work), but the default behavior is to affect only the MIDI in a default setup. This makes sense for most users, so I understand why it is like it is.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Assuming the program is kept the same such that the count in is on the drum track regardless of whether it is midi or real tracks what could be done is this. The mixer needs an extra row for count in volume. All tracks on that mixer start out at the default value. Lets say the default is 10 for everything. The user decides they want to lower the drums to volume 8 and they want to raise the count in to value 11. So the program simply starts the drum track at volume 11 (while doing the count in) then the program drops the drum track to volume 8 (a drop of 3) when the drums starts. So it makes it real simple for the user to visualize and be reminded of what they did the next time the song plays. The basic idea is always the same. Make it easier for the user and harder for the programmer...lol. Don't feel sorry for the programmer. He only has to do it once and he enjoys the challenge and normally he gets paid for it...lol.

That would be a nice-to-have.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
