Cakewalk is replacing Music Creator with Sonar Home Studio. The last Music Creator, Music Creator 7, is based on an older Sonar DAW engine while Sonar Home Studio uses the current Sonar DAW engine.

Cakewalk presently offers both ++ SONAR HOME STUDIO ++ and ++ MUSIC CREATOR 7 ++ . PG Music also offers Music Creator 7 ++ HERE ++ . Cakewalk's product pages show Sonar Home Studio works with Windows 8 & 10 while Music Creator 7 works with Windows 7, 8 & 10.

Both products include the multi-timbrel soft synth, TTS-1, and the Studio Instruments virtual software suite of drums, electric bass, electric keyboard and orchestra strings. Many people purchase one of these low cost DAWs just to obtain the soft synth and virtual instruments.

Home Studio has a better feature set than Music Creator 7 but, as a long time user, I'm going to miss watching the progression of Music Creator.

Thanks for the tip, Jim! I just ordered Sonar Home Studio yesterday and wanted to bump up this note because today is the last day for the special pricing of $35. Esp helpful to me for the inclusion of TTS-1...since I had no other GM software synth. Mainly want to use it in BIAB...will get to SHS later!

OK a little gotca to be aware of

The TTS-1 is a DXi. Home Studio I see will work on 32 or 64 bit OS; hence, I assume (like big brother Sonar) has option to install either the 32 bit or 64 bit version - whichever one you pick the TTS-1 DXI installed version will be the same "bit" version

BIAB cannot use a 64 BIT DXi and JBridge is of no help since it is for VSTi's only

either install only the 32-bit version of HS to get the 32-bit TTS-1 or see this old thread

one way to have your TTS-1 "cake" and eat it to

Little Gotcha? hmmm. Larry, I really appreciate your warning, but it came too late. Apparently I did choose the 64-bit install of SHS. As referenced in the thread you linked, Cakewalk did not install both 64- and 32-bit versions as Dave Baay indicated would be likely. (Program Files (x86)/Cakewalk/Command Center does list about a dozen dlls, but TTS-1 is not one of them; there is nothing under Cakewalk except Command Center).

Your workaround is appreciated and very thorough, but also above my pay grade. Dave's suggestion about installing just the 32-bit TTS-1 dll is encouraging and less daunting in that it is simpler. Would it work? The new SHS is apparently a new version. Not sure what's possible and what sort of mess I might create. I suppose there's not much to lose except possible corruption of SHS...unless I might do damage beyond SHS in the process: I'm not fluent in registries, dlls, etc...just know enough to ask "where's the library" -pun intended)

I might need to go check out Cakewalk forums and generally upgrade my knowledge about dlls, etc. Not what I had in mind.

was there an option to install SHS as 32 bit? if so

1. REINSTALL SHS as 32 bit (no biggie and no harm no foul it won't hurt anything.

2. Go find "TTS-1.dll" (shoudl be in "...\shared DXI" folder) and make a COPY of it and call it something like "TTS-1- 32 bit.dll"

3. Reinstall SHS as 64 BIT again (and again no HARM - no FOUL) if you want a 64-bit DAW.

4. Again find the "TTS-1.dll" (which is now a 64 bit version) and COPY it and call it "TTS-1 64 bit.dll"

Now when you want to use TTS-1 as 32 bit with BIAB just delete the "TTS-1.dll" and COPY the "TTS-1 32 bit.dll" and call it "TTS-1.dll"

Remember SHS will complain if you try to use TTS-1 in SHS without using the reverse process (i.e., delete the now 32-bit version of "TTS-1.dll" and COPY "TTS-1 64 bit.dll" and name it TTS-1.dll")

None of the above is as hard as it sounds.

However, Dave's method is a lot less painful but you STILL need to have access to both the 32-bit TTS-1.dll (which means you will STILL have to install SHS as 32-bit just to get a copy of it) then do what Dave suggests then REINSTALL SHS as 64 bit.

But I have never gotten around to Dave's suggestion - I probably should.

I went to Cakewalk's "Knowledge Center" and read recent instructions for installing both 64- and 32-bit Sonar at same time. However, must have been for higher pedigree version of Sonar, because "Command Center" permitted an uninstall, but not a re-install of both...so I picked 32-bit.

TTS-1 dll then did show up under Pgm Files (x86) - 32-bit version - as expected. Then I was able to virtually plug in some guitars & keyboards and enjoy some mighty fine MIDI pickers in BIAB!

You're right, shouldn't be too hard to get 64-bit SHS working as well, but I'll save that for another night. Thanks for all your help and encouragement!

I Have Sonar Platinum and I NEVER use Cakewalk Command Center

Just go to your account and find your products and download SHS (and whatever else is there for it) and install manually NOT HARD.

but if you want to save some time look in

C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads

that's where CCC stores your downalods before installing. Your SHS, and all associated items (if any), will be there and you can manually just run it/them from there.

If you fell you have to use CCC you know Command center has a few options, right?

Click on the little settings icon (looks like a gear on right hand side towards top) this will open page with two tabs. Check the "verbose" check box then if you don't like where it puts your VSTs and where it stores downloaded installs open the second tab.

But no matter where you tell it to put stuff the Cakewalk Studio Instruments and all it's multisamples ~1.2 GB's will be on your C drive (not a lot unless you have a small SDD boot drive) - it takes a registry hack to move them.

Good Luck

Again, great tips on Sonar, and much appreciated. Keep in mind that I had never heard of Command Center before yesterday...thought it was baked into the SHS install. Slowly unraveling Cake's install mysteries. Digging into Home Studio itself should be even more "interesting!"

One final tip

The last few "updates" (say last for months) for Sonar and some their apps like Rapture Pro have started LOCKING updates and re-installs of items (the program itself, add-ins, as well as the various shared DXI, MIDI, etc. component folders you set up at first install) to the initial install location, period.

IF YOU WANT to MOVE things around or maybe have SHS on a different drive or partition - you would have to UNINSTALL it (and that uninstall removes a lot of stuff in COMMON with other and/or older Cakewalk product installs) completely - then reinstall it to new location.

For now, for you - that probably sounds unimportant especially if you have a large boot drive (i.e., C:\ drive) and/or you always install everything to default locations then this won't matter (YET).

But as you start filling up your boot drive with OTHER applications or if you have a small SDD (solid state disk drive) this WILL be important.

SO if you think you may want to have SHS and a lot of its "stuff" on a different drive or partition - NOW is the time to do it. Uninstall everything, then do a clean "initial" install to where you KNOW you will want it for years to come.

Just a heads up - that's all

One of the problems you might be experiencing using Command Center to install is that by default, it does a "silent" install, pretty much bypassing the ability to set any options on how you want it installed.

To allow you to do a manual install (so you can choose the options you want), click on the little gear icon to set your options. From there you can do several things.

1. Check the box next to "Verbose Install". It is unchecked by default. If you do this, you will see all the options for which version to install, which custom paths you would like to use, etc.

2. There is also a "paths" tab that lets you set your default paths for installation and where you want Command Center to download files to.

MC7... I guess all good things must come to an end sometime.

However, Home Studio looks interesting and the price is right at $35.

One more in case you didn't see it, and this is NOT Cakewalk's fault, but if you run Win 10 read

http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=381525&gonew=1#UNREAD

They WILL fix it so in the meantime if you have some SHS hiccups when using some plugs, report them to CW forum, but they may be due to that.

Good luck
Larry

Thanks again for a timely heads-up, Larry!

The Cakewalk alert indicates that the issue may go beyond Sonar crashes and may affect other DAWS using the listed CW plugins (CA-2A, Rapture Pro, Rapture Session, Z3TA+2)...so maybe BB and RB. Comments following the alert indicate that the issue may affect non-Cakewalk plugins, too. Seems to be less a Cakewalk issue than a Windows 10 update issue. I received a Win10 update yesterday. No problems yet, but also minimal usage.

Folks looking after each other in these PG Music forums...the best!

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
