I find that I am no longer able to generate a Real Track on the strings channel, probably since the latest build of BIAB 2009. If I select any Real Track to use on that channel it will not generate, and the song begins playing with the strings channel still empty and not highlighted. If I open a song file made in early July (with an earlier version of BIAB 2009) that used the strings channel for a Real Track, it plays normally. Rebooting and relaunching does not solve the problem. The computer is a 2009 Mac Pro running 10.5.8, BIAB is 2009.5, build 7. Has anyone else seen this?

I have seen it recently on the melody and soloist channels, when I try to select a different instrument. It appears to load but won't generate.

I haven't been able to duplicate any problem like that. Just generated a bunch of songs, with RealTracks on Strings (and Melody and Soloist). Please let me know if there's a way to duplicate it.
For example, if you boot the program (or choose File-New), add a RealTracks to the string channel, and press PLAY, does the issue happen?

I couldn't remember what song file I had been working on when this appeared, so I opened several random files that I had recently worked with and also could not see a problem. But I finally found and opened a file that had shown the problem (there may have been others) and sure enough, it is still there. The file has Real Tracks on 6 channels (bass, piano, drums, guitar, melody, and soloist) that generate and play normally, but something prevents the strings channel from generating the Real Track that the drop-down claims it has. The behavior is exactly as described in my original post. I know of nothing that is different in this file from all the others here that behave normally.

If you want I'll send the file as is -- just let me know what email address to use.

Thanks for your attention.

>> but something prevents the strings channel from generating the Real Track that the drop-down claims it has.

The usual cause of this would be setting the track to "Disable RealTracks for this track" in the RealTracks Picker dialog.
If that isn't the case, please forward file to support@pgmusic.com, with a request to forward the file to me.
Thanks

The 'Disable RT...' box is not checked for the channel in question, so I'll send the file.

Yes, we've received it. thanks. The strings track has been disabled for that track, so that MIDI or Realtracks won't play. Choose File-Save w/patches to rectify the problem, and the track will then play fine.

Thanks, that does fix it. I see that unchecking a track box in the Save With Patches... dialog will disable that track. I don't know how this particular track got that way, since I had never explored that facet of the app. But I wonder, is there is an advantage to disabling a track rather than leaving it empty or muting it? Incidentally, I have seen some instability when using the Save With Patches... dialog. With the latest build and OS 10.5.8 or 10.6 the application has sometimes crashed when exiting the dialog with the Save Song As button.

Muting a track is global. For example, if you mute a trackname, then load the next song, that track will still be muted.

Using the Save with Patches window and not checking a track is saved with the particular songfile, which is nice for going through a folder of songs such as on a live gig or practice session and you may want a certain track not heard in one song, but need to hear that track in the next and don't want to take a chance on forgetting to unmute that track when the song loads and plays, not nice on the live performance at all.

With the MIDI styles, you can't leave a certain track empty if the style loads with that track. Next time the song is loaded or next time you hit Play, which regenerates the song, the track will come back.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
