Hi guys - I've been learning a couple of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. They tend to be the more obscure ones.
There's a couple of 'cliche' sounding songs they do, and I was wondering if anyone can share what styles, grooves, songs or bands that came before them sound most similar. In particular, the songs are:
1. Hot Dog 2. South Bound Suarez 3. Down by the Seaside
In fact I'm often impressed at the overall band sound and instrumentation these guys came up with.
For the early albums the blues influence is pretty obvious especially the first 2 albums. But they seemed to really put a unique sound and stamp on many of their songs. Some that sound really fresh to me given what came before are Over the Hills and Far Away, the Ocean, Dancin' Days...oh, lots of others. But maybe I'm just not as familiar with what came before.
What is your opinion of them ?

Hot Dog is clearly a Rockabilly Influence while Down By the Seaside is a Neal Young style. Think Down by the River. I’m hearing a kind of shuffle with Southbound Suarez.
Before Led Zepplin started recording, pick most any top studio recording done in Britain in the 60s and Jimmy Page was the studio guitarist, so he was steeped in every influence there was.

The roots of Elvis and the Rock-a-billy genre are related to British Isles folk; thinking -- fiddles, clogging, uptempo, that kind of thing. The "British Invasion" of the 60's and 70's had elements of "back at ya" with influence of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee. Led Zepplin captured the American and British youth market in a way that hadn't been done before. One influence that sunk into the genes was Eric Clapton, esp. white noise.

Ahhh - now I hear some of the Neil Young. Thanks for sharing. Ed, I'm familiar with British Invasion, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, but who are some of the big names in British Isle's folk. And Keith - who are the Rockabilly guys I should check out ?

And Keith - who are the Rockabilly guys I should check out ? First and foremost, Carl Perkins. Then early Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Horton, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Joe: I was thinking of European folk music of Britain, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Central Europe, predating audio recordings, heard in videos such as this one: https://youtu.be/pojy5d7lwtY The songs are often traditional, not associated with individual writers or performers.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
