I've been on the forum for years, but until now the only songs I've posted have been goofy ones for animations. But the past year's lockdown has got me streaming music again on Streetjelly and PalTalk, so I've been developing songs for streaming live. (I just don't have the knack of making good clean studio quality mixes, but I do like a good ol' nasty live recording!)

Having said all that, after years of recording cover songs, this is my first original blues.

The style used was _BTGSHUF.STY, but in the end I muted everything except drums and bass, then played my primary groove onto a 3rd track. I play mostly the same groove live, except in a few places where I have to simplify what my hands are doing in order to sing. I was shooting for a live 3 piece band sound.

Drum intro and outro were achieved by loading the entire real drum file for the style. I listened through the whole file for appropriate rolls, which were then cut and pasted to the necessary location, then unloaded the rest of the RD audio file.

An attempt at making the drums sound more 3 dimensional was done as follows:
I made 3 copies of the drum track, put the 10 band EQ on each track, then on each track I rolled back all the frequencies except the lows on one track, mids on the next, and highs on the other. Then I panned the low frequencies to center, the mids hard left and the highs hard right. It sounds better to make 5 copies, but hey.. resources, right?

Video is recorded with OBS STUDIO and a web cam.

=================================

They lyrics are a bit contrived for the genre, but here's what I was shooting for:

the first verse is symmetrical.. the guys point of view. He wants them to be on the same page, so each line starts with constructs like "KNOW...KNEW", "THINK... THOUGHT", "HEAR... HEARD", "FEEL... FELT"... he mirrors her.

The second verse uses a similar construct, but with opposing words, since they are in fact NOT on the same page. "Die... Live", "see... blind", "joy... grief", "pray... curse"
Hence the title NO SOLUTION, which also appears in the chorus, where the disparity between what they want is finally realized by the protagonist/singer

In retrospect, I think trying to enforce these verbal constructs made the lyrics a bit stilted. What works as a song writing tool is sometimes at odds with the mood of the song. But it is what it is. Time to move on to the next song. ;-)

Lyrics:
I know you knew I was in love with you
I think you thought that made me your fool
I hear you heard I had bought a diamond ring
I feel you felt that wasn't cool

I want your love... you want my money
there's no solution, and that's not funny
To marry me would bring an end
to your stream of new boyfriends

I'd die to live my life with you
But I see you're blind to my grief and pain
What you call joy is the grief of others
I pray your curse won't make me insane

I want your love... you want my money
there's no solution, and that's not funny
To marry me would bring an end
to your stream of new boyfriends

Hello Pat,

That is, what you call, a 'rock solid Blues!
A good performance and nice listening to (and watching you play the guitar).
I liked what I heard and it far more better than what I expected after reading your post.
I think you are being too modest about your performance ;-)

Have a nice day,
Hans

Hi Pat,

That was astonishingly good!

Some of the best blues I've ever heard on here.

Fabulous vocals, delivered with energy and conviction.

Wonderful guitar work and a great blues tone from that guitar
which I couldn't quite see fully in the video, but which is
obviously something special.

Such an exciting live sound and if I lived just that bit closer,
I'd happily pay to come to one of your gigs. One of these days perhaps...

You really HAVE to do some more of this.

Take care and stay safe old pal.

ROG.

Nice video and cool blues rock song.
The mix freaks me a little with the almost Beatles split of the drums...
Nice bit of SRV really.
Cool.

Cheers

Pat!

Goosebumps! Now THAT is some great Rockin' Blues!!

A good Blues write. And very well sung. The mix is good - a great "live sound". Drums and Bass are solid. Your guitar tone is a delight.

There is a terrific "musicality" to your Blues. A treat for the ears. Superb solo - really musical.

A real treat to "just listen" - a few times and I'll be back for more.
You definitely need to do this more!!! Woooo!, inded!!!

Great to see ya back in the Showcase.

Pat, my favorite part was the woooh at the end. It’s great to hear from you again. You have made a lot of people happy with your appearance here. Glad to see you bought a ticket on the blues train. All aboard! Super riff. The harmony pedal was just the right touch. Good solo with some fine note choices. The vocal is soulful and committed to the excellent blues lyric. This is the real deal for sure! We will be near Wilkesboro for the month of July. Get ready to jam. See ya soon, Tom

Thank you Peter! I have been listening to your playing on the forum for quite some time, and you can count me as a fan. Which makes your kind words about my song all the more significant to me. I really enjoyed your part in Janice & Bud's recent song WILD WOMEN.. y'all have a good collaboration going there. Keep it going!

You mention the word "fun"... I've listened/watched a lot of music which lacks that quality, so I make a conscious effort to insert some fun into my shows. I figure if I don't put it there, it ain't there. Period.

Thanks for taking time to listen and comment, Hans! I greatly appreciate the positive evaluation of my song. It's been a while since I've listened to the showcase tunes, and your name is new to me... but I'll make it a point to seek out your songs and comment. I made a new years resolution to write some music this year, so I'll be here for a while to see your work.

regarding the topic of musical modesty: taste is very subjective, and there is little upside to overstating one's talent. It never ends well. Best thing is to do my best, put it out there, and the chips will fall where they may. I can't control anyone's opinion, but I can control what I put out there.

Thanks again for listening.

Hi Pat
Like others have said, that's a solid blues, really well played and sung. I also enjoyed reading about how you approached the lyrics, which you clearly put some thought into. Look forward to hearing more of your originals.
Regards,
Leon

Well.....hell..... I certainly was NOT expecting THAT!

I had to double check that I hadn't clicked on something else.

Man.... I was duely impressed. I got a Pat Travers riff rock vibe from that.

Nicely done. You just raised the bar for everyone including yourself. Loved everything about this from the driving riff undergirding the entire song, to the very tasty solo, to the vox.

Loved it.

Hi Pat, It is great you are back and that we are able to hear your music again.

That was a really good blues song and a nice production. It was interesting to read about how you did it and I think the end result was quite good.

Top vocal performance too!

Thanks for sharing!

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Wow!

That pretty much sums it up.

Out of curiosity, are you a lefty, or did you just flip the video? It took a while before I figured that something was "off" about the video.

I appreciate the cleverness that went into the lyrics, but honestly, when someone plays the blues as well as that, you could be singing nonsense and I'd barely notice.

A lot of work on the drums, but haven't you heard? Mono drums center panned are the new big thing. wink

OK, just being silly there.

But seriously: Wow. laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Pat, I reckon you nailed it.

Knock out set of lyrics.

Great driving beat.

Perfect melody.

Three out of three. Perfect score.

Really enjoyed this. Quite a classy croc.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
