Between the COVID limitations, the snow that's falling outside and the freezing temperatures, I find myself trapped in the house. So I decided to take BiaB, find a new style I liked and write a song today. It's not necessarily a great song but I filled the day doing something I really enjoy. I tried to write outside of my lane (gospel) and do something folky and a bit of Americana. Long story short I chose a style called ROANOKE MOUNTAIN AMERICANA TRIO and by the end of the day this is what I had. It was great fun and a bit of a challenge. Next time you get bored or are trapped like I am give it a try. Just let the style dictate subject matter and the melody...Dan

Hey Daniel,

great use of your time! Are you originally from the southeast? In other words, are the Blue Ridge Mountains your home? (I see your location is listed as Illinois.) If not, we'll chalk it up to creative license.

One (of many) nice thing(s) about Band In A Box is that it does make it easy to step outside our preferred genre and try something new every now and them. Congrats on a successful excursion into new territory!

Well, for writing "outside your lane", you sound way too comfortable - sort of like a card shark complaining that he's never played before, and then performing a fancy one-handed shuffle. grin

Nice mix - guitar in front, but not harsh, mandolin sitting nicely, and vocals well placed. Really nice balance on the instruments.

The whistling and fiddle make a nice combination on the instrumental break - as if only one wasn't folky sounding enough!

Nice vocals and harmonies as well. The lyrics fit right in with the style.

Maybe the mix is a touch bass heavy, but since getting the low/mids on my own mixes right, I don't think I'm really qualified to speak here. blush

Nicely done!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hey Pat and David...thanks so much for your kind words and comments on my little day adventure...To answer Pat's inquiry, I am not from the Blue Ridge area but most of my family and my parents are Kentuckians (I'm the first foreign born (Illinois) member of the clan) so my roots go back there and I prefer the grass to be blue...David, I agree with the bass comment...I'll work on that today...I just shoveled the snow in my drive and I think I'm better suited today in the studio...Thanks again...Dan

Very pleasant listening to this and everything was well done. I might've chosen to sing some of the lines solo for contrast, but that didn't detract at all. Very enjoyable!

I usually do solo lines in contrast to the harmony lines but honestly I like the harmony on all of the lines...and I wanted the effect of a bluegrass band sitting on the front porch of a cabin in the woods singing together...anyway that's my story...

Dan, thank you for travelling outside your usual "lane"--really enjoyable work.

I live in NC, and before it got too cold, I spent a couple of nights camping on the Blue Ridge Parkway--this reminded me of that wonderful place and stoked my desire to get out there again in the spring. So I can say that you hit the feel right on the mark!

Plus, I think you got the music feel just right..I like the instrumentation and selection of BIAB components.

Very nice work!

I first listened to the 'live' version. Then I listened to the RT version.

My interests go to the composition, and there is much here that I like very much.
I found many phrases that used chord movements that I find very appealing..especially the modulation to an unexpected Maj (III, I think). And the sequence of descending m7b5-->7th-->m. I also appreciated the various stops between sections to give the next section some time to begin.

Very lovely track, highest quality of composition and orchestration. Great work Shigeki!

I have a high school buddy who keeps sending me pictures from his front porch out in the Blue Ridge...Back here in Illinois I can only dream...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
