Mastering the recorded track is essential as it is something which adds sheen and finish to the track. When the track is released commercially, the effects of mastering are seen. The track appears louder, clearer and professional. Mastering polishes the track by making up for any deficiencies that may be present while the track is getting recorded. The mastering is performed by a mastering engineer, who has years of experience in fixing the tracks. This procedure is indispensable when there is more than one track in the album. The process fixes the gap between two sings, alters the frequency to perfection, even out any anomalies in the width and the volume. Mastering is for perfection. However, it needs to be attempted only by mastering engineer. A mastering engineer has years of experience in fine-tuning the soundtracks. The expertise and trained ears of the master engineer can make out for any issues in the track after listening to the same. The master engineer makes use of many types of equipment like the equalizer, compressor, monitoring systems etc. to master the track completely. The mastering engineer knows how to make the sound sweeter by eq and compression. The noise in the background is reduced to the minimum to render clarity to the melodies. Mastering engineer can boost the low frequencies, if required, to make it sound good. The services of mastering engineers are now also available online. This process of online mastering is easy and affordable. The quality of the mastering achieved is the same as the attended mastering services.

The following is from another DAWs website, and to a degree applies to all DAW software, just substitue the name of you favorite where it's name (mulitrackstudio) is and read on. While this is not an absolute fact it is a solid view point.

Traditionally the multitrack recording is mixed-down to a stereo tape recorder. This stereo recording is then 'mastered', which usually means that EQ and (multi-band) compression is applied. When mastering for vinyl, EQ and compression had to be applied to keep the needle from jumping out of the groove.

Using MultitrackStudio, mastering after mixdown-to-stereo does not make sense, as all the settings involved in the mix are stored in the song file and can be recalled at any time. You can add effects to the mixer's Master section and use them for mastering purposes. Typically an EQ, a Compressor and a Master Limiter effect will be used. The Master Limiter should be the last effect. If multiband compression is required a Band Effect with compressors can be used.

When mastering a couple of songs that belong together (a CD for instance) it is very important that the songs sound 'the same'. They should be equally loud, have the same tonal balance etc. MultitrackStudio's songlist feature can be very convenient for this job. Using a songlist you can audition your CD before actually mixing the individual songs down to stereo.

The song can be mixed down using the Mix Down menu's "Mix down to audio file" option.

While what you say is true, there are other aspects to mastering a stereo file as opposed to the original tracks. Cleaning up the beginning and end are a couple to start with. Especially songs that fade; compression and expansion settings have to be closely monitored in the end result.

I actually prefer to have the mixdowns, then load all the stereo wavefiles into one sequence file (one at a time) to allow the ability to click back and forth between songs for easy comparison. I'll master one (usually the one anticipated as the feature song for the CD first), then import the next song on another track so I can compare as I go. Then import another .. keeping copies of the originals of course.

Another often overlooked aspect is having someone else do the mastering with an un-biased ear. That can make a difference in itself.

I will say, there are some very talented people using PGMusic products, and am a little disappointed they don't spend more time here on the forum teaching what they have learned. I have mastered some very impressive BiaB/RB creations, but they are not mine to share or discuss. Some are indeed registered here on the forum, but do not spend time here ... which may have something to do with their productivity; they are busy doing!

I think we kind of said the same thing, although differently. My point is that what most folks think of as mastering is not as important as they might think. There is mastering that needs to be done to polish up a song. Like fades and such, and especially things like making a Cd full of songs sound good in transition with each other.

I think that where some confusion comes in is where some people think of mastering as a process that is magical and that a song is never done without it. Much of what many feel is mastering is still in the area of mixing, where you get a sound that is right. There is no need to master in the sense that you are transfering it from a tape environment to vinyl, as in the old days. But volume balance, fade outs, and sometimes normalization are very powerful. Don't you think that over mastering is responsible for the over compression today where the dynamics are ruined in some music, and there is loss in range of the fidelity of the music.

Anyway what the heck do i know! lol

It is written a little oddly but I do see the value in this. To a degree anyway, I think that the mastering process can be widely misunderstood, it is not as obvious as the recording and mix phase and little media exposure is given to mastering. I think this is changing a little and that many record labels and musicians appreciate that the music needs a final check during online mastering before it is released to the wider world. I am glad I joined, I love music production discussions.

respectfully submitted

I think the whole 1st post should be canned. The repetitive nature of the keywords is the key.

What happened to walking in a club and playing?

The best music always seemed to be after midnight when someone un-announced sat in.

I'd like some acoustic throwback myself.

Forget diddling forever with the tracks. If you suck at a live venue I don't want to hear your songs that have been 'played with' for weeks and canned by some guy from outer canuckistan using a supercomputer and an anglo-rhythm from yer-up.

Look at the history of music. What 'mastering' was done 60 years ago?

I guess it's like make up. As grandad said, if the barn needs paintin'...

Put Lady Gaga in a housedress, take away the makeup, and give her drummer and a bassist and let's hear what she can do. I might like her after she does a few of Ella's tunes, I might even say give her a little Miles Black backup to go with the other two. Black Coffee ...you pick the key.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
