I have been trying all week to record a melody using an M-Audio Oxygen 9 keyboard in BIAB2011 on a MacBook Pro. It's a very simple setup -- just keyboard to USB, but I'm getting some pretty strange behavior.

The keyboard shows up fine in Audio Midi Setup. I can play and record with it in Garageband just fine too. But BIAB makes no sound and records 0 notes when I hit record and play from the keyboard. If I change the Core Midi port from Apple DLS Synth, to port 1 for all instruments, then change it back again, I can record notes, but I can't hear them as I'm playing them, only after I've finished recording. If I leave them on port 1, or on BIAB Virtual Output, then I don't hear either the notes I'm playing or the backing style until I finish recording and play it back.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

Hello, i've found the simplest way to get this at work is to open Biab AFTER that the keyboard is connected and turned on.
In this case, in "select ports" window, i don't need any changes: on "midi in" is rightly selected my keyboard, and ports on apple dsl synth.
The instrument i hear playing the keyboard is the one selected in"Thru" channel of course.
I've been doing this with an Oxygen too.

Thanks for responding!

I did actually have the keyboard ready before starting BIAB -- I even tried restarting the computer with the keyboard attached, but it didn't help.

Interestingly, the midi in automatically selects Port 1, rather than the name of the keyboard -- don't know if that means anything.

Just a thought here, do you have the latest M-Audio Oxygen 9 keyboard software update installed for your Mac OS ?

Yes, I downloaded it earlier this week. And, as I say, it seems to work fine with GarageBand.

OK, another thought, when you launch Audio Midi Setup and go to the Midi Studio Window have you run "Test Setup" ( even though as you say GarageBand is receiving/transmitting the midi data flow to and from the USB Keyboard )?

Yes. I get sound when I do that, but always the same note. In other words, no matter what note I play on the keyboard, it always sounds the same under Test Setup, but I get the regular notes in GB.

Download MIDI Monitor http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/ to test/confirm the midi in/out data. When you go to the "filter" area of MIDI Monitor and play a key on the keyboard it will show you the key ( s ) that you played.

MIDI Monitor is a utility for Mac OS X which displays MIDI signals in a variety of formats. It can watch both incoming and outgoing MIDI streams, and can filter them by message type and channel.

Do you have any other Audio/Midi DAW to run a test the "recording" of the midi out from your keyboard ?

You may have to refer your problem to Mr PG or to M-Audio. I have found that both are very helpful.

Problem solved -- turns out my new copy of BIAB on the external drive from PG was corrupted. I installed it on my internal drive, then copied it back out to the external, and that fixed the problem.

Thanks for your responses.

I have been having the same problem you discussed.
Did you copy just the BIAB program ... or any additional files with it?
Thanks

Update:
My keyboard recognition was cleared up when I went to Core Audio and then selected my keyboard from the pull down menu. All works now.

I have been trying to get BIAB 2017 Mac to recognise my external midi controller keyboard with no joy at all.

It works fine in Logic Pro9.

Anybody got any ideas ?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
