Using PowerTracks 12(12), Vista SP1
I can't the mixer pan to work when using VST plug-in synths.
I'm new to these. The only one I've used before was the VSC. Collected 12 of them from Computer Music magazine and free ones. They all work and make great sounds, but none can be panned from the mixer. The gain slider worked on ten of them, but two did not responde to gain or pan.
I tried inserting cc10 into the event list but still no pan.
VSC is the only one whose pan and gain can be controlled by the mixer.
I figured, well, these are free and you get what you pay for but -
The magazine's CD included a sequencer called "energyXT" and its mixer pans all of them and the gain slider works on all.
I have searched the manual, help, and forums but no luck.
I must be missing something with PT?

PT mixer (I think) uses GM panning messages, and many synths are not 'GM' standard.
Make your sound your own!

rharv is correct as there are many VSTi/DXi synths in which Midi is controlled from within the Plugin itself. It is a long time since I looked at Computer Music, but I do remember a number of Drum Plugins which required individual drum instruments, velocities, panning etc to be set up within the Plugins. Look for a Plugin which has a GM standard bank of sounds such as Forte as a replacement for the old VSC.

That must be it. But these plug-ins came from various places and have no connection to the energyXT program and it works them all.
Not sure why anybody would make a synth and change something so basic as the pan code from the GM standard.
PT selects the patches ok, and controls the gain (mostly) but not the pan. Also, when you select the plug-in's panel you usually have to do it twice.
I'm happy with the VSC for standard instruments but want to start creating pieces with more wild, far-out sounds. There's a world of them out there for cheap or free.

A not too complicated solution:
Convert the midi tracks with these VSTi to audio.
Then the mixer pan should work just fine on the saved audio.
I would head over to the wishlist and add this one in. Here's my opinion for what it's worth - the mixer should work on AUDIO; whether it's recorded audio, or the output of a VSTi, it shouldn't matter.
You shouldn't be required to go through the steps of committing to audio before doing a little panning experimentation.

Thanks Scott. I thought of that too, and it does work, but like you say, it really ought to mix the MIDI. I like fast interaction and change my mind a lot.
This is rather discouraging.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
