No luck searching forum archives.

Is there a way to adjust velocity/volume in BIAB? I know how to adjust real tracs and real drums but not midi.

Also I just went to a new laptop and have the settings to the max but still not getting the volume I was getting with the old one. Hoping I can adjust via BIAB?

Thanks,

Danny a little off from what you ask but you need to understand the difference between volume and velocity.
Now your question. The mixer.

I'd like to increase the volume of my midi tracks playback in BIAB i.e. global volume adjustment. Is there a way to do this within BIAB?

Edited portion:

The mixer seems to increase the drum volume and realtracks too much as compared to the midi tracks.

Thanks,

Maybe the windows mixer has a low volume level on the midi channel. That mixer is what BIAB rides on.

What Win OS? Check the control panel Sound Settings or right click the speaker icon in the tray.

What are you using for the MIDI output device?

If it is a DXi synth, be sure to go to Options->MIDI/Audio inside BiaB and hit the DXi settings button, bring up the DXi synth itself and make sure that all faders including the Master fader are turned up all the way.

Danny, have you got cans or external speakers for the laptop ?
Maybe investing in an external soundcard might help if all other advice fails ?

Graham,

I am going from laptop through PA, sound quality is fine but just a a lot less volume than old laptop. I am adjusting on the PA to bring it up. But you know what that means . . . most likely I will have to adjust volume on every (nearly 700) BIAB arrangements. Thanks.

I'm thinking that the software mixer applet for the sound device may not be set to show all faders.

Try opening the software mixer applet and search it for commands under the menu items, look for one that has which fader channels are shown and not shown. Usually there is a check box that must be checked to have them show when the mixer is opened.

Microsoft Wavetable Synth likely shows up on a fader that would be marked as something other than the standard Wave output. Labeling might be a tad cryptic sounding, but if you simply check to show all faders thena at least you can experiment or just turn every fader all the way up, including the Master fader.

I recommend the "all faders up" setting, including the Master, when trying to drive external amp such as PA with the headphone output. Line level audio sounds best when driven hard like that. Get the volume level at the PA hardware knobs and not using the software mixer.

**You might also find a way to select all Inputs for both Recording and Playback in the Control Panel of the OS as well. Look for Sounds or Soundcard Setup or something like that.

Is there not a boost midi volume command buried somewhere?

I know there is a 'normalize' function. I suppose you could watch the midi monitor and look for the volume commands and make sure they are all the way up. I have my external Ketron hooked to my pre-amp on the mixer, however my practice is to attempt to put everything volume wise at 12 o'clock, including my piano, unless my notes say to boost something for the piece. Thus I do the volumes inside Band in a Box with the new fancy shiny sliders window, and then save them that way so my keyboard and the external mixer applet are all in the middle.

Well after adjusting I every volume control I can find to max I have come to the conclusion that the new Lenovo just does not have the volume and punch of the old model. So I will have to either adjust via PA volume or go back into every (ouch!) BIAB file and make the adjustments there. Just FYI even the mixer slider does not sync all track volume equally, especially the drums as they seem to increase in greater volume than the other tracks.

Thanks to all who tried to assist.

Maybe its time to look into a hardware MIDI output device like the SD2, Danny.

Small and sounds awesome on the gigs.

OH!
Bottom row of keys. There's a RED Fn key on the left. On the right are RED keys that are also the left/Rt arrow. Hold the RED Fn down and then toggle the RT arrow key. Volume go up?

John,

This has nothing to do with the quality of Lenovo and whether it works “fine” or not. In fact you may recall I was one of the members here who touted Lenovo to you. To that point I just purchased another Lenovo after using the old truckster for the past 10 years or so, which I might add stills works “fine”. I just wanted something from this century. And the volume output from the new compared to the old is (guessing here) about a minus 20% or so. Not enough to make me want to besmirch the product but a workaround is required nonetheless.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
