Post your MIDI Styles Requests here (Note: This is not for RealTracks or RealStyles requests!!!)
===========================================
Also, this is for MIDI "Styles" requests. If you have requests for MIDI Features, post them here http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/showflat.p...SID=#Post342842 .
We have made over 2,000 MIDI styles, but some people want more.... which is great!

We need to hear specific requests for what MIDI styles you would like. For example, we don't want to make styles that already exist in our 2,000 styles.

What are you looking for ?Jazz ?HipHop ?Country ?Rock

Please post the request here, or if you've already posted it elsewhere, post a link to that here.
If you agree with another user's post, add a +1 to it.

We'll collect these requests, and make some more MIDI styles disks (likely for 2012.5 release)

Have Fun!

I would really like to see some more styles based on the pop/rock pianists. There are a couple of Elton John, but more variation is welcome - Honky Cat, Bennie and the Jets, the arpeggiated sound of Don't Let The Sun, etc. Likewise for Billy Joel - Stranger, New York State of Mind, Root Beer Rag, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. Bruce Hornsby - The Way It Is, Mandolin Rain, etc.

I'm not asking for styles that are used to sound just like the song, but have that same feel (where you might say, is that Billy Joel playing).

I would also love to see styles with brass riffs a la Chicago, Blood Sweat And Tears, Chase, Earth Wind And Fire, etc.

For Chicago riffs, for example, put sax, trumpet, and trombone on different tracks (string, guitar, piano) and it still leaves the bass and drum track available. Roll it into RealBand and you can add the other instruments, or better yet, once generated, zap the brass parts to other channels via the Sequencer feature, choose another style and pick up the rest of the band. Lots of options.

If you look at the four main categories of style provided by PG they are pop/rock, jazz, latin and country. I would love some styles designed for all the other songs in the Great American Songbook.

To quote just one example, I cannot find a style that is right for Moonlight Serenade with it's smooth brass section. Everything is too harsh, too jazzy or too bouncy. I usually end up substituting brass for strings or adding vibes but it's not the same. The one style I end up using time and again is Rendevue because I can make it OK by substituting but it would be great to have a choice of smooth styles designed for "standard" songs.

I am requesting this in the midi thread because I assume it is much easier to implement than in RTs and midi suites me fine.

Thanks
Tony

+1 on the rock piano. We've got a couple of things that mimic specific songs, e.g., "Piano Man", and some Jerry Lee Lewis in there, but
Quote:

Never too many piano styles.

I also, of course, would like some more classical styles, focusing on strings and woodwinds (but eagerly awaiting anything at all). Some nice Bach-based keyboard work would also be fantastic. (The great thing about doing that in MIDI is that you could swap the instrument from piano, to organ, to harpsichord, to classical guitar, to harp, to electric piano, to dulcimer, and it would all sound great....)

Some simple piano 6/8 rhythms please. The celtic jigs on real tracks are just far too busy and cluttered for my liking. Just a simple bass / chord vamp would be wonderful.

I second some 6/8 piano and some 6/8 complete styles with all instruments. A lot of contempory Christian music uses this.

Any Specialty styles that solve musical needs that are often interpreted by users as program deficiencies are worth spending development time on. Such styles would be:

1) Expanded styles ... That way the age old complaint about needing more than 4 chords in a cell might actually go away.

2) Styles that work well in a variety of odd time signatures. That addresses the ongoing request for odd time signature support

etc etc

Reposting from the BIAB Wishlist. I put this there before I realized there was a similar thread in the Styles list.

Quote:

I am interested in 1980s and forward electronic music Styles. I may not be able to afford the latest version of BIAB, but put out a disk of styles taken from the below and I'm on it.

Fertile grounds here. Artist examples include:

- Peter Gabriel (Us, Up) does some really interesting ambient stuff as intros and interludes that could be developed into complete styles. (This is more R&B, but "Sledgehammer" and "Steam" Styles would be great!)
- Mike Oldfield (Ommadawn, Hergest Ridge, Tubular Bells 1, 2, and 3, Tres Lunas, The Songs of Distant Earth) has some tracks going that would translate well into MIDI. (I am NOT asking you to attempt his guitar work, unless you want to try it as Real Tracks.)
- Jean Michel Jarre (Oxygene [plus sequels], Equinoxe, Les Chants Magnetiques, Zoolook, etc.)
- Vangelis (Blade Runner)
- Tangerine Dream (all, but especially their Hollywood period)
- Klaus Schulze (take your pick--he has a 50-CD set out. I'll have to do some more research to narrow it down.)
- Kraftwerk (Autobahn)
- Mannheim Steamroller (all)
- Yello (Get On)
- Air (La Femme D'Argent)
- William Orbit
- Robert Miles
- Kitaro

If you want to hear exactly what I am drawing from, go to Shoutcast/Winamp and search on "Klasyka Muzyki Elektronyczne." (Polish for "Classic Electronic Music.") Winamp gives you song titles and group names. I listen to this station almost constantly. I draw heavily on this music as inspiration for my sound.

Correction to the list of electronica above. The Winamp/Shoutcast station should read "Klasyka Muzyki Elektronicznej." I have enough trouble typing in English, let alone in Polish. Cutting and pasting that into Winamp's search box will lead you to the station. Almost anything they play will fit well into this category.

And some late adds:

- Jan Hammer (Miami Vice soundtrack).
- Alan Parsons Project (I Robot, The Turn of a Friendly Card, Eye in the Sky). Specific cuts: Sirius/Eye in the Sky, Psychobabble, Mammagamma (all from Eye in the Sky).

Two Polish artists:

- Marek Bilinski. He creates some great atmospheric grooves that would translate well into MIDI Styles. Think elements of Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, and Vangelis.
- Wladyslaw Komendarek. In a category of his own. In addition to albums, his music has been used in documentaries.

I will get back to you with specific tracks from Jean Michel Jarre.

Some 'rough' jazz styles in the manner of Ornette Coleman's various rhythm sections with Ed Blackwell in the 60's and his 'Prime Time' band with Denardo Coleman in the 70's-00's.

An abstract non-metric free jazz style.(s)

A straight eighth ballad in the style of Coltrane's 'Naima' or 'After the Rain'.

Some broken-time abstract funk grooves in the style of 'Downtown'NYC jazz musicians like Tim Berne.

A style based on Henry Threadgill's fusion of funk, latin, and New Orleans marching styles.
See any of his recent albums like 'This Brings US To'...'for examples. The most creative player composer on todays scene IMO.

Some more latte day New Orleans style funk.

A style based on pianist Richie Beirach's more up-tempo work in the band 'Quest' with Dave Liebman with very 'active' drums a la Billy Hart.

Regards

A few more big band styles with slower tempos for ballads.

Would like some more string ensembles that are better quality.

Some nice string ensemble and flute real tracks would be most welcome also.

I have asked for this several times.
The current big band styles are all very bouncy while many of the big band and standard ballads (like Moonlight Serenade or At Last) need a smoother style.

The new MIDI styles should be Real MIDI styles, see my post #346011 about that wish. Like that the velocity of the patterns should not be constant and not too much quantized. So a good new feature for MIDI styles !
Some ideas of styles : 3_4Boston, Madison, more Big Bands styles, styles ala BBKing, Ambient styles with loops.

It should be great also to have more multistyles for Latin styles, Jazz styles, Pop styles in order to get more variety than the classic A/B sections.

Just to be sure : I own all the PG MIDI styles, set#0 to set#77and my count is 1749 MIDI styles.
When you speak about over 2 000 styles, do you include all the special classic styles like FS001.sty to FS044.sty, al the NGxxx.sty? What other styles do you include in your count ? or Am I missing some MIDI styles ?

I need a utility style that sends sustaining chords on each part.

I want to send the chords to multiple keyboards' arpeggiators (KARMA and Motif) but I need to be able to choose an octave for each part.

Thanks!

+1 for the big bands with slower, ballad styles. Think Henry Mancini "Days of Wine & Roses", Jackie Gleason "For Lovers" arrangements. Lush strings and horn sections with highlights (multiple soloists?) from multiple instruments.

I also would like for some of the earlier styles to be updated to include features now available.

+1 to jford's thought on providing separate tracks for each instrument in an ensemble — as opposed to having just a single track that pulls up GM ensemble voicing, which is the case in many PG Music MIDI styles.

Besides brass sections, string sections and drum kits, too, could benefit from having their own styles wherein the individual instruments are divided among the available slots in Band-in-a-Box. Brass section, string section, and drum kit styles could stand alone, to create tracks that then can be sent to RealBand and added to a user's separately-generated band tracks of a compatible style. Or, perhaps, new "multi-pass" style sets could be made by PG Music to ensure compatibility between ensembles and the rest of the band while also allowing for really full, lush, and articulate mixes.

If I wanted a 12-piece band with a horn section, for example, on the first pass of generating instrument tracks to accompany my melody and chord structure, I might load a hypothetical HornDawgs1A style — the first part of a 2-part style set — and thereby generate the bass, keyboard, drums, guitar, strings, melody, and soloist tracks. For my way of working (Your mileage may vary.), I would then output each of those instrument tracks as its own separate audio (.wav) file for subsequent mixing in RealBand. Before any mixing, however, I would next load hypothetical style HornDawgs1B — the second part of a 2-part style set — to generate the horn section for my song. Where typical BiaB single-pass styles would usually have to limit the horns to a single brass ensemble track in order to also accommodate all the other aforementioned (minus one or two) instruments, this second pass could generate separately, say, trumpet 1, trumpet 2, trombone, sax, and flute. After I output the individual audio tracks for each horn, then I can begin mixing all 12 tracks in RealBand. Hotcha!

I'll leave it to you, Dear Reader, to imagine how multi-pass style sets including separated string ensembles or drum kits could be similarly applied.

No changes need to be made to either Band-In-A-Box or RealBand to accommodate this method of significantly increasing the number of instruments available in a style. It's just a matter of some new style sets being written by PG Music and/or after-market vendors, for something more than single-pass output.

Hey, I'm just sayin'....

Be well, be happy.

Sincerely (No, I really, really, REALLY mean it this time!), Bro. Dave Lister

Works for me, Bro. Dave. I suggested something like that awhile back -- having, say, a series of Beethoven Orchestra styles, one for brass, one for strings, one for woodwinds and one for everything else. I'm sure it would be a lot of work on PG's part, but maybe they could farm it out to us. I'm also strongly pushing for styles that use Garritan's Instant Orchestra.

1. Rootless piano voicings. 99 percent of the time, the bass player is playing the root of the chord.
http://www.chrisfitzgeraldmusic.com/lessons/PianoVoicingsHandout.pdf

2. Open or spread piano voicings instead of "close" voicings.

+1 for open voicing in the strings.

I would also like an option on some string styles where the B substyle is pitched up an octave. Or even better, add a C and D substyle to mimic the A and B, but up an octave. Useful in movie music.

I know I'm a little late in adding my thoughts on this Midi Styles request thread, but why not just make a midi style for every real style that is made. This would allow those who use sound blaster or vst synths that produce rinky dinky results to choose the real style loops making them happy, while others who have invested many $$$ in multiple high end synth modules along with extensive patch/sample libraries, to select the midi version. The best of both worlds. Very important as well to allow multiple midi out options so we can use the various hardware equipment we have. Also plug for adding a music score so music notation users can view on screen all midi parts in standard music notation. Thanks !

I think this is a great idea, so +1. If your players had MIDI instruments you could actually do it at the same time the Real Tracks are created. (Only problem is, how many MIDI Dobros are there?) Sorry, couldn't resist, altho it could be done with a GK pickup and Roland VG-99, which provides true pitch-to-MIDI conversion. Seriously, it would provide an instant starting point. You could use Celemony Melodyne to help automate the process for other instruments.

Another vote here for more piano styles. Although there are some great RealTrack pianos, they're a lot more prone to glitching because of pedaling and chord voicing. I'll often be hoping that the drum hit will hide the transition.

That's when I start searching through the MIDI styles for a comparable piano part.

And I'll echo the need to treat MIDI tracks similar to RealTracks, in that you can request a particular instrument, and get a MIDI style that only contains that instrument. Trying to dig through styles to find one that's got the sort of piano or string part that I'm looking for is an exercise in frustration.

What I really want is to be able to select "Piano", and see the MIDI piano styles.

With the suggestion of sections, it seems to me that BIAB MIDI styles should be able to take advantage of harmony styles. That is, let's say that I wanted some "Big Band" sort of riffs. Couldn't a MIDI style be developed that was basically monophonic riffs? This could then be "auto-expanded" by the auto-harmony function into full section arrangements.

So (being the lazy arranger I am), I could pull up a "Big Band Strings" on the Strings channel, and add "Big Band Horn Stabs" on the piano channel. Both would use the auto-harmony function to create the voicing I wanted.

Once I picked "Big Band Horn Stabs", I could have the option of changing the harmony on a bar-by-bar basis. So I might choose "8va" at one point, "3 part close" at another, and "4 part open" when I wanted a really big sound.

BIAB already has this sort of functionality. It just seems that it could be made a bit more transparent and easy to use.

This is a great idea IF you still have the option of loading something other than a piano.

It would load a single MIDI instrument - much like Select Custom MIDI Style for this track does. But I think it makes more sense to change the MIDI instrument via the usual options (GM dropdown list or VSTi Instrument button) rather than as an option on the dialog.

I understand why Select Custom MIDI Style for this track has the option of selecting an instrument there, but since I'd likely be assigning it to a VSTi instrument, I'd prefer that functionality not to be part of the dialog.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

The new Bolero real track is outstanding. While we have had bolero midi styles for some time now, I believe we are missing the “Vals” and “Danza” which are sort of related in the mood they provide yet different in context. It would be stepping toward completing the latin styles with the tango, mambo, seis and many other previously released styles. Thanks!

Hi Latjimenez and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you start a new thread for this request. The new version of BIAB has Son Montuno and Bolero RealTracks, which are not MIDI, and this thread is about MIDI styles. PG Music might decide to make new RealTracks in the styles you would like.

Hi all,

With the advent of the new MIDI SuperTracks with 2012.5 release it occurred to me that it would be a great idea to produce a whole collection of drum tracks using these new techniques. The RealDrums are fantastic but obviously you no flexibility with them in terms of producing separate wave files for bass drum, snare etc. If the same quality of feel could be prodcued via MIDI for these drums then they could be played through quality VST drums such as Toontrack, Addictive drums and so on. You could then generate separate wave files for each drum instrument which would allow plenty of flexibility in mixing. You could of course edit out cymbal crashes or add them and all kinds of other esimple MIDI editing. I am sure the excellent people at PG Music have already thought of this idea but it seems an obvious way forward for BIAB. If we could easily genereate fantastic drum parts ranging from jazz, rock, latin, blues, reggae etc etc etc all played by real drummers but produced via MIDI it would be brilliant.

So there is my suggestion for what it is worth.

Regards

Tony

I would like to see a lot more slow classical styles with a tempo range of 70-120, and now, with the introduction of MIDI super tracks, it would be nice to see soloist lines to go with these classical styles.

Also some smooth jazz styles like David Sanborn, George Benson, Peter White, Dave Koz, Bob James, Fourplay, Acoustic Alchemy, The Ripingtons, Etc. [/quote
I'd second that.

Also maybe some funk. Tower of Power etc.

I requested this already elsewhere.. but since we're talking midi styles specifically...
I'd like to see some midi supertracks that can be used to build brass sections...
then I'd like to see some styles that use those supertracks (funk, R&B, BST, Chicago styles)

Why did Peter Gannon ask us to post what midi styles we wanted and say new midi styles would be added at the 2012.5 release only to not do that nor even mention anything about them . Super midi tracks are not midi styles . I listened to the Super midi track demos for 2012.5 and again for 2013 and don't see how one can say they are anywhere near being a midi style . My definition of a midi style is one written for midi instruments . The file exported would be a midi file with separate tracks that could be displayed and edited in standard music notation software . If I wanted audio loops I think there are far better ones to be had elsewhere . Now I know some like the real styles , I don't because I can not edit them or have the control as I would have with a midi file . Does anyone else get it ?

I get it about midi styles but super midi tracks are just what they say they are and that is midi tracks! They are not styles and they are not advertised as styles. You can use them in midi styles, RealTrack styles or in combinations of both. They are midi so yes you can edit them. Also as midi files you can export them as midi.

I use mostly midi styles for the same reasons as you do.

I hope this helped clear up this misunderstanding.

(I hope this helped clear up this misunderstanding.)

The misunderstanding is on PG Music's side . Peter Gannon clearly asked us to submit lists of midi styles we would like to have them create , and they would most likely be included in the 2012.5 release. As I pointed out they instead presented Super midi tracks , which clearly are not midi styles . To my ears the Super midi tracks were , lifeless , no meat to them , boring ... I wouldn't use them anywhere . Yes I know I could edit them since they are midi , Rather than waist the time it would just be easier to play them in myself with feeling , a better presentation IMO .

So Mr. Peter Gannon will we ever get any new midi styles , all tracks being midi as they are in style sets #1 through Set #77 ?

Bob Norton can chime in here and list all of the reasons , or things that one can do with midi that can not be done with audio loops .

I know some of the midi idiots have not upgraded since real tracks came on the scene , I'm still here and continue handing over $$$ as are others in hopes that PG Music won't disregard requests of those of us who with our support over the years helped make BNAB the success it is today .

The misunderstanding was on my side, sorry. Now I know exactly what you mean and being a midi idiot I agree with you 100% about adding new midi styles. We want more midi styles.

Yes More MIDI styles, but :
1 - no MIDI styles with outdated grid drums, we want Live Drums
2 - no MIDI patterns with constant velocity. we want variable velocity patterns.
Many MIDI styles have patterns with the same level of velocity for the notes. That means no dynamics.
I've been requesting MIDI compressor/expander/humanizer for velocity to get much dynamics, but up to now, nobody cares about that.

Good points John-Luke. These are a couple of reasons I only do rough drafts in BiaB. I bring the midi files over to Sonar where I can randomize both timing and velocity levels of those tracks.

Still waiting for new MIDI styles ? ? ?

I so hope with the new release that PG Music has listened and understood , MIDI is not DEAD ! Some of the best sample libraries are audio triggered by MIDI, including but not limited to, BFD2, Addictive Drums, Garritan Series, Native Instruments Series, and on and on. Give me a MIDI track and I can do almost anything. Audio is what you get and has limits.

MIDI IDIOTS raise your combined voices and be heard .

So here we are with the release of 2014 and still NO NEW MIDI STYLES ! Why ask us what we want and say your going to make new MIDI Styles when you clearly HAVE NOT , and as it now appears , WILL NOT ??? What a shame ... My theory is the genius who was involved with writing the MIDI STYLES is no longer with PG Music . No other logical explanation fits IMO . Wouldn't those Real Tracks strings sound so much better playing through Garritan Personal Orchestra , or the horns through Garritan Jazz Big Band ? What about instead of Real Tracks drums those same tracks could be used to trigger the 558gigs of samples in my BFD2 and BFD3 libraries where I could switch out kits or any of the drum or percussion components , snare , kick , toms , cymbals , or anything I wanted in that library ? More high quality MIDI triggered sample libraries are being produced every year . I have over 900gigs in various libraries now that I use , plus 8 hardware synth modules all sounding WAAAAAAY BETTER than Real Tracks , and none of them can be used because you can not trigger them with an audio Real Tracks file .
As I said ," WHAT A SHAME "!

Peter,

I have made this request before, but with the addition of the Legato feature it would be especially nice to have new Ambient, New Age, Electro, and related Styles. Now BIAB can play long, dreamy pads and washes without that choppy sound that was so labor intensive to edit out.

Question: Will present Styles play legato in 2014?

Thanks for everything,

Richard

Version 2015 and still no new midi styles ...

It looks like they are trying to fool buyers with the info listed on this page . I called and they told me it was a typo . Really ?

http://www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.packages.every.htm

Compare the Band-in-a-Box 2015 EverythingPAK with older Versions .

How Many MIDI Styles ?

(2015) - 2,000+
(2014) - 1,600+
(2013) - 1,400+
(2012) - 700+

They need to fix the typo , so people who would buy if there were new midi styles , don't do so , as they will only be disappointed . What a shame again !

I for on ewould like to see more 4 part styles. You guys started developing them and then dropped them. Like otheres I like the real tracks but perfer the MIDI tracks for the ability to play better /different sounds from sound librarys and the ability to edit and fine tune the files. So 2000+ files isn't enough. 100,000, 250,000 or a million styles would be even better. I also like the idea of being able to use loops which in fact opens up a whole new area of styles. Just keep up the work gang. More, more, and even more!!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
