Both 2011.5 and 2012 - same problem:

I cannot quit the program without going to task manager. When I quit, I get:

<cannot create file C:\bandinaboxserver_strings.txt>

access is denied at 00422B66

I had the same problem with 2011.5 before updating.

Windows 7, 64 bit

Please advise...

TIA,

Sam Kanter

Hi Sam,

If this was my problem, the first thing I'd try is to see if it's the User Account Control (UAC) that's causing you grief. Below is some information on UAC from the PG Music FAQ page.

http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq23.htm#100

In Control Panel, there's an option called User Accounts. Go into that and turn the UAC off. Then start BIAB and see if you can close it. If all works well with UAC deactivated, that allows the problem to be isolated.

In the meantime, a some questions that spring to mind are ...

1. How are you running BIAB (e.g. from the internal hard drive, external USB drive, etc.)?

2. What external equipment do you have hooked up to BIAB?

3. If you're running BIAB from the internal hard drive, what folder do you have it installed in?

Regards,
Noel

CTL Alt Del and then kill the biab.exe thing.

Or, stand back and the computer hits the bathtub.

Just kidding.

Thanks for the suggestions, Noel.

Running from internal HD,C:\BB folder, computer is MIDIed to Casio Privia keyboard and sound card (M-Audio Delta 20/40). This is my home setup, not my studio setup.

I did not see an option to turn UAC off, only to change name and reset password. Suggestions?

Ctrl ALT DLT _is_ the task manager. I can do that. Looking to solve the issue.

Sam,

Do you use ASIO and, if so, which driver? Still on the ASIO theme, if you are using that, it would be valuable to change to MME, restart BIAB, and see if the problem persists. (The reason I'm mentioning this is because I've read reports on these forums where some ASIO drivers cause issues.)

Regarding User Account Control, the below link will tell you have to subdue it. The Win 7 instructions are about 1/4 of the way down the webpage. (I have Vista and I wasn't aware of the subtle difference between the UAC function in the different operating systems.)

... Modify User Account settings (link)

Regards,
Noel

Noel, I use MME and have disabled UAC. Still no change, I get the same message when I try to quit BIAB and have to go to Task manager. I've sent this to PG customer support, was advised to disable UAC as well. This doesn't work.

Any other ideas?

TIA

Sam,

This is indeed a mystery. Are you using any of the remote apps to connect to BIAB (e.g. iPod, etc.)? Also, have you tried resetting to factory settings? (It's located under Opt. on the upper menu.)

Another thing that might be worth trying is to set the BBW.EXE to run in compatibility mode. I have Vista (as mentioned above) and, a while back, I set BBW.EXE to run in compatibility mode for XP (service pack 2). Not sure why I did this as the program was running fine. It's still running fine. That being said, it's worth a shot. You can always change it back.

Locate BBW.EXE in your \bb folder. Right-click on it and choose "Properties". You'll find a tab for compatibility.

Lastly, I see that there's a setting in the above "Properties" dialogue box for activating Admin Privileges - which also might be worth a shot. (On my system it's grayed out so I suspect it might be like that for you, too. As soon as I work out how to make it active, I'll get back to you.)

Regards,
Noel

Everytime I get into something I can't fix NOW or the guys on the forum can't get fixed NOW I call support. they have a toll free number and they will even go on line and remote check out your system if you allow them to. They have always solved my problems right away! I figure, they wrote it so they know. And they always seem to!

Something has set your Folder c: BB bbhelper to read only. Try deleting that Txt file from the folder, and see if the problem goes away,

Thanks, for the suggestions, Peter and everyone else. I'll try this tonight when I get back home (two systems, one at home, one in my studio).

Peter, these 3 txt files are in my C:\BBHelper folder:

bbinput
config
realtrackspatchnames

Should I delete all of them?

There are allso two app files, biabserver and unins000.

Thanks,

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
