For my current project I'm creating my accompaniment in BIAB and then I want to export each track to WAV, import each track into Reaper (just as if these were separate recorded tracks from a session) and then do my mixing in Reaper (I know about RealBand and I'll be working with it in the future but for this project its Reaper!)

When I select the Export One WAV File Per Track I can get 7 WAV files for importing into Reaper.

-Drums
-Bass
-Guitar
-Piano
-Strings
-Melody
-Soloist

1) is it OK to assign a RealTrack to Melody and Soloist tracks and then export them like this or are these two tracks reserved for some other specialized use?

2) should I export WAV files as Stereo? (I'm kinda thinking I should not so I can move them around in the stereo field in Reaper but not sure.)

3) possibly related to above, should I pan all of my tracks to the center before exporting?

4) is there any specific volume level I should use before exporting?

5) should I export without effects and then apply those in Reaper?

6) should I set all tracks' Tone and Reverb to 0 before exporting and then set those in Reaper?

7) should I select the Normalize option when exporting?

8) anything else glaring that I have missed?

I realize these may not really be yes/no questions and I know "depends" is probably the one true answer to rule them all. But I'm kinda looking for rough guidelines as I'm pretty new to this whole process.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!

Hi John,

I use Reaper all the time for mixing and recording vocals. To answer your questions ...

Quote:

Yes, that's fine. When you save the file, though, any RTs on the Soloist track will "Freeze" and if you wish to regenerate and create a different solo, you'll need to deactivate "Freeze".

2) should I export WAV files as Stereo? (I'm kinda thinking I should not so I can move them around in the stereo field in Reaper but not sure.)

My experience is that individual tracks always export as stereo. I've found it makes no difference to the mix in Reaper.

3) possibly related to above, should I pan all of my tracks to the center before exporting?

I do. Under the GM menu there's an option to "Set panning to Mono" (which puts all panning to zero). I also set the Audio Reverb (A.Reverb) to zero, too, because I like to add reverb in Reaper.

4) is there any specific volume level I should use before exporting?

I never worry about that because I always normalize each track in Reaper and then use the track sliders to adjust individual volumes to suit.

5) should I export without effects and then apply those in Reaper?

Yes, I would. (See reply to (3).)

Quote:

6) should I set all tracks' Tone and Reverb to 0 before exporting and then set those in Reaper?

I do.

Quote:

7) should I select the Normalize option when exporting?

I do that in Reaper although it would be the same either way.

8) anything else glaring that I have missed?

Not that I can think of.

Hope this helps,
Noel

I did notice in Reaper when I bring in a track exported from BIAB in stereo that it has both stereo signals in the single Reaper track whereas if I bring in a mono it is only the single signal. I guess I don't know enough about all this to know if that matters or not but I'm thinking having each track as mono might be better for creating my own stereo mix. Does that sound right?

Hi John,

Some of the RTs are recorded in stereo and some are mono. For example, Piano and Drums are stereo recordings while Bass is mono.

My workflow is to create a song in BIAB and then open the MGU/SGU file directly in Realband. The reason I use Realband is because it maintains a track's integrity when it generates it and will load stereo instruments in stereo tracks and mono instruments in mono tracks. I then save the tracks generated in RB and load them into Reaper. As a consequence, my Reaper tracks will be a mixture of stereo and mono. This works fine.

To force all tracks to mono prior to using them in Reaper means that some of the sonic texture of the stereo instruments will suffer. My basic rule of thumb with mixing is maintain tracks at their highest possible integrity. If I am going to sacrifice quality, the only place that will happen is at the very end of the process when I am mixing down to (say) an mp3.

Hope this makes sense. I suggest you try using RB as a stepping stone to Reaper. See if it makes a difference.

All the best,
Noel

It depends on the track. If the source was stereo (drums for instance) you'll want the stereo file.
If it was mono (most bass tracks for instance) then mono will be fine.
I try to keep them separate.

You don't want to make a stereo source into a single mono track (reduces quality), but making a mono track stereo should be less harmful, so the safe way is using stereo tracks.

I may be different than many, but sometimes I intentionally make a stereo track into two separate mono tracks when mixing. Yet another option once inside the DAW.

Make your sound your own!
.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
