Hi Don,

I've found that sometimes it's better to search for "open source" of "freeware" rather than "free". Here's a link that might be of use...
links 1.

and here's another...
links 2.

Regards,
Noel

I THINK you can do this in XP the same as I do in Win 2000. All you do is, and at this pont I'll assume you know what I mean, add another printer. Go through the wizard and at some point the type of printer will be fax. Then from any program that you can print from you can fax. Just hit print and use the drop down to choose the new fax printer and click OK. You'll then get some dialog boxes open for the phone number etc.
If you need more howl

G'day Silvertones,
normally you'd be correct, but if you check the first post you'll note he's lost his XP CD - can't install the m$ one without the files on the CD...

Don, if you do find the CD, then in the printers folder, just select |File|Setup Faxing| and follow the prompts - but I'd guess you've already found this.

Lawrie,
Hello to you.
I don't quite understand why he needs the CD at this point if windows is already installed. I didn't need to insert the cd to add a printer. Maybe XP is different.
BTW my first post was not quite accurate. You don't add the fax printer from the screen I showed. You do it this way and then it will show up in the printer screen.

To add a fax printer

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fax.
On the Advanced Options tab, click Add a Fax Printer.
Notes

A fax printer is automatically added to the Printers folder when you complete this procedure. To add additional fax printers, repeat the procedure.
By creating additional fax printers you can easily customize printing preferences. You may designate different billing codes and different times to send your faxes. For example, you can have one printer for sending faxes now and another for sending faxes when discount rates apply.
You will not likely need to reinstall the original fax printer since Windows 2000 looks for new hardware each time you start your computer.
You can view the printers in the Printers folder by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, and then clicking Printers.
If you are unable to add a fax printer, you may have insufficient user rights. See your system or fax server administrator

PS my network has been working flawlessly since your help. Thanks once again.

If a FAX service was not installed when XP was originally installed OR it was deleted then there are files on the CD that are required. They do not exist on the HDD. This is especially so if a service pack was installed sometime after the XP installation.

Man, Dragnet - that takes me waaayyyy back... I remember watching the series on TV as a kid sittin' beside me dad. Mid to late 60's? Took a while for stuff to get to Oz from the States in those days...

I have the Fax as a default install in Vista.

However, I've got to enjoy the first line of the instructions:

1. Connect a phone line to your computer.

Uhhhhh. Modem? You mean like dial up? I don't think anyone makes a PCI-e modem.

Don, I have a question for you. I know you're asking for a fax software, but do you really NEED to fax someone? How about sending an e-mail with a .pdf attachment? You can get PrimoPDF ( http://www.primopdf.com/ ) which will install like a printer, then instead of hitting the Fax from the drop down in any document, just 'print' it to PrimoPDF. Then attach the .pdf document to your e-mail and send it.

The reason I say this is that faxes are becoming harder and harder to find, and send and receive, as everyone moves to more modern e-mail. I mean, if whomever you're sending this to still uses fax, so be it, but it just, to me, seems easier to send an e-mail.

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

I should point out, I had to go look, and no, there aren't any PCI-e modems available, but there were at least four USB modems. I guess that makes sense for those who need to use dial up.

Gary

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

A lot of faxes are still sent/received via All-In-One printers. Even though they can scan and send via pdf thru e-mail with the unit most times they simply use it as a fax machine.

As Russ says, "Go figure!"

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
