So, in answer to the question..."Can I obtain an enforceable copyright in a melody generated by BIAB?"...the answer is "MAYBE and MAYBE NOT." Just like any melody you come up with in your head. There is always the possibility that someone got there first. Sometimes those melodies come unconsciously from something we have heard before. So, MAYBE and MAYBE NOT. However, a lot will depend on the chord structure you choose for your song. It's a greater possibility that you might end up with "similar" or "close enough" melodies by different people using the same chord progression. Much more unlikely, however, with different chord progressions.

You can obtain a copyright on any work, matter of fact under current US law, a work is copyrighted as soon as it is completed by the author. There is, however, copyright *REGISTRATION* which is what I think you are trying to refer to. Registering your work with the US copyright office costs about 40 dollars per work, or you can go for the less expensive "compilation" copyright, which for the one price will cover an entire compilation of songs, such as a CD. However, there are caveats as to your protection with the cheaper method. The copyright office does not do searches to see if your work is a copy of someone else's. But do not take my word for it either. You should visit the source, the US government copyright office webpage and at least read the FAQs there, which answer a lot if not all questions. http://www.copyright.gov/ Rumors, misinformation and disinformation are rampant on this subject. If you are serious, get your information only from the source. --Mac

No work is invested with a copyright until it is reduced to a physical form from which it can be discerned (tape, CD, sheet music etc.) So, you can't just whistle a tune...or play it on a musical instrument and obtain a copyright even if you created it in front of a thousand witnesses. It is true that the Copyright Office does not rule on the originality of a song submitted to it and therefore, one can register a work that is an exact copy of Hotel California. But A) such a copyright would be INVALID and B) it would actually violate copyright law to copy the song for purposes of registration. Best, Jim

Glad we got past the squabble about semantics! I've found the melody generation very helpful as a starting point when writing a song. I let band-in-a-box generate lots of melodies until I find one that I can relate to, then I use a phrase or two to inspire me. I almost always change most of the melody, and the chord sequence here and there.

I understad that I own the right to a song that I create using BIAB, but I need documentation. I have already seen Sales FAQ #22, but I need something a little more concrete for YouTube monetization. They are specifically requesting that I reference this permission in the software's License Agreement. Can someone point me to a page in the Owner's Manual, or some other authoritative source besides the FAQ? Thanks, John

There's form posts from staff and the owner. There's also the fact that the license file doesn't claim any rights to any derived works. There are BiaB files all over youtube now, why the worry?

I'll try again... I keep getting this from YouTube: "Hi, To assist us in processing your submission for monetization, we would like for you to provide us with more information regarding the license agreement for the audio (including background music) contained in your video. Specifically, we need for you to confirm that you have been cleared to use the aforementioned material for commercial purposes. You may e-mail us this information as an attachment or provide us with a direct link to the terms. If you would like to monetize videos that contain audio from or created from software, please refer to our Monetization FAQs at http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=2490089.Sincerely, The YouTube Team"

Did you receive this reply after citing BIAB's Sales FAQ #22? The YouTube link even mentions FAQs as a possible source. I would like to know precisely what YouTube means by "royalty-free software". No software company can certify that a song you make does not infringe copyright. Early posts in this thread, some mine, describe some of the reasons for that. There is another FAQ here that relates to the previous point: http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq28.htm#29But to answer your first question, I am not aware of anywhere else on the PG Music site or license that says anything more clear that those two FAQ entries.

I found some pages in the manual that may be applicable. However, at 14M, it is too large for me to attach in my email to YouTube support. Is there an online manual that I can link to?

Just send them the appropriate parts.
or ..
Create a Dropbox account* Upload the file Send them a link to the file
Temp free storage is available.
*not endorsing Dropbox, it's just a familiar free service. There are many others like Google Docs, etc
/not sure how PGMusic feels about sharing their manual, but these services can allow the user to only share it with a suppled link, so it's not really public.

I would register my works with the us copyright office.
When asked, I'd show 'em my copyright.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
