This isn't so much a question as a statement.

BiaB 2013 doesn't allow me to have add2 chords with alternate basses. For example, if I try to create an Fadd2/G in the Chord Builder dialog, I get the message Error in chord Fadd2/G.

Obviously, there are workarounds by using similar chords, but this seems an odd exclusion. frown

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi David,

That's an interesting find.

When I come across anomalies like this, I simply send a note to PG Support to let them know about it.

Regards,
Noel

Interestingly enough, it only happens with Fadd2, so it must be a bug.

F2/G works on my BIAB. Don't need the word "add". Later, Ray

I was going to suggest F/G but if F2/G works go for what think best expresses what you want.

Thanks!

I initially thought it applied to all add2 chords, so wondered if there was some bit of theory that might be missing out on.

But it looks like it's just an simple bug that only applied to Fadd2/X.

David, I verified that all the other chords, including sharps and flats, work except Fadd2.

I do wonder what the difference in BIAB is between add2 and 2. They seem to sound the same to me.

For BiaB, sus2 and 2 are the same (root+2nd+5th). Basically, like a sus4 but replacing the 3rd with the 2nd of the scale instead of the 4th. If you enter Csus2 BiaB will simplify it to C2 instead.

The add2 adds the 2nd to the chord, but leaves the 3rd in place (root+2nd+3rd+5th).

That's the theory, anyway. Who knows what a style actually plays, especially if it's a Realtrack.

For example, there are a number of piano Realtracks that don't play sus4 chords when requested. I'm not sure what they're playing (my ear isn't well trained). I'm sure they're great jazz substitutions, but they aren't the chord I need, so I can't use these otherwise lovely tracks. frown

For a given Realtrack to be able to play the add2 properly, the raw Realtrack file would have to have that chord somewhere in it, as Realtracks work by selecting bits and phrases out of what was originally recorded to the "raw" Realtrack file.

"Add2" isn't likely to come up very much in the Realtrack Recording Scenario where live musicians play along with chord changes in a stylized situation.

But don't overlook use of MIDI instruments in styles along with use of a modern great sounding MIDI synth solution, using Patches such as many of the Keyboard Patches, Melodic Percussion Patches, even sometimes a certain Guitar Patch, can force the exact chord needed by use of the Melody or Soloist tracks. And, when mixed with Realtracks in the same performance, the masking of one or two MIDI instrument solutions along with selection of the more real sounding Patches available to you can yield a very realistic sounding playback.

I'm not at my BIAB to try,
but might E#add2/G
rather than Fadd2/G
make any difference to BIAB?

Yes, it works! And as a bonus, it's converted into an Fadd2/G.

My hat's off to you, sir! It seems so obvious in retrospect.

Changing the key to D, entering a Dadd2/E and then transposing back to F also works, but it's not nearly as elegant a workaround.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
