I would think this would be an easy thing to do (but of course, I could be wrong).

It would really be nice if I could take an MGU file and just be able to select, "Save As SGU", which would strip out the melody and soloist part and just save as an SGU.

I will generally create a BIAB song with the melody track containing, well, the melody and the soloist track containing song-specific licks. But if I want to give the file to someone else, I just want to give the SGU file (which will have the chord progression without all the other stuff). Right now, I have to manually kill the melody and soloist tracks and then do a Save As to save as an SGU. It would be great if the program could just do the killing of the tracks for me.

yes, I can see a usage for such a feature.

I've done this for a few tunes: Make an SGU file, save it then enter the melody, save it. There will be two files, SGU and MGU with no extra work. Later, Ray

I get what John is suggesting. I need to hear the melody with the chords to be sure I have transcribed a song correctly. Then, if I wanted to distribute it, I would need to remove the melody to be legal.

How about "Erase Melody" and "Erase Soloist" commands?

Hi, Matt -

There are commands to erase melody and soloist (PG calls it kill melody and soloist). But that's just it, let it all happen in one command. PG provides two different file extensions, one with and one without. Why not be able to take an MGU and save it directly as an SGU, which has no melody or soloist part.

To Ray's comment, yes that's what I do. I start with the SGU file. Bu then, once you add anything to the melody or soloist track, the file will save as an MGU file. Period. However, once you start working in the MGU file, you often make changes to the chord sheet also. Once you start doing that, your SGU is out of sync from the MGU file.

I'm just trying to automate what now takes several steps to do. Most programs allow saving as different formats; it would seem to be an easy thing to do in this case. Sure, put up a warning that you are about to change the file to exclude the melody and soloist, but since you are saving it with a different extension, you still have your original file to work with.

The current process is to:
1. Select Melody, Edit Melody Track, Kill Entire Melody.
2. Select Soloist, Edit Soloist Track, Kill Entire Soloist Part.
3. Select File, Save Song As, file format SGU (which is the only one listed, since there is no melody or soloist). [As an MGU file, only MGU is listed as a file format.

What I would like to be able to do is:
1. Select File, Save Song As, and from a drop down box (which is already there) select SGU (and have the program automatically strip out the melody and soloist).

Seems this is the type of thing computers should be able to do to save us time.

Yes, thanks John, I forgot about those as I hardly ever use them and I'm not at a PC.

Your description of SGU files becoming out of sync is exactly what happens with me. I almost always delete them once I create the MGU. I completely agree with your simpler suggested method.

Wait - you want computers to Save us time? Is that even possible?

+1. Pretty useful idea.

May I suggest you modify the topic header to reflect stripping melody and solo tracks while saving as SGU? It might help PG Music spot it easier.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
