I sat down at a piano with my laptop open to a spreadsheet and carefully entered all my chords for a new song as I played them.

Then I sat at Real Band entered those chords exactly like they were on the spreadsheet.

I picked my style and hit generate. I let it run for the however minutes it took to generate the tracks for the style.

When it was finished, I hit play.

The song was ALL over the place. I went back to the chord sheet, and the generate function changed almost every chord. Where I had G/c, suddenly it was Bb. Where I had Am, suddenly it was G. About 75% of the chords were changed after generating real tracks.

This is ridiculous. Now I have to go back and enter those chords again, or just play the thing manually, which is not why I have Real Band.

Very aggravating to have to do things twice or three times. And THEN maybe not have it work at all.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

Since both examples given are one whole step lower than what you wanted, also check to make sure that Key Sig is entered correctly, also that no Transpositions have been invoked.

In Real Band or Band in a Box?

I always start in BB, (never in real band) entering the chords into the grid after selecting a style and tempo and the key.

Be sure to check the default key as well.... be sure it's set the same as the key you are playing in. I can't understand why it would change a G/c to a Bb though.

I choose, 99% of the time, from the styles which contain the real tracks so it sounds better.

G/C to Bb, might just be he's hearing the Root transposed down one step.

Question for Eddie:

Match the song playback to a standard such as your keyboard or other instrument tuned properly, in an effort to see what is actually being played back as versus what chords you see. An inadvertent instrument transpose, for instance, would leave the chords sounding correctly, but notated differently. That could be a clue as to which type of transpose may be happening.

No transposition, Mac. It only happened on 75% of the chords. And the steps of the changed were random. Some were 3 half steps, some were 2, etc.... A C was changed to a Bb, but and Am changed to an F#.

I am not even going to waste time on this. I am going to start using RB just as a DAW and play everything myself, and generate only a drum track. Kind of defeats why I have Real Band, but if I have to do everything over it isn't worth the bother to use it.

I also don't want to start in BIAB. There is no reason to do that. That isn't a fix for a bug. By the same logic, I could start using Sonar. RB is what I want to use and it's supposed to work correctly. The first time. Without "reset to defaults" every other day. That is not a fix. That is a bailout.

Hi Eddie, I hear your frustration.

Has this happened to you on more than one occasion? Do you think it's a hard fault in the program?
I have to ask, because if it was, there would be pages of items on the Forum, surely.

I don't profess to have the answer, unfortunately, but if it's repeatable, then maybe need to enlist the assistance of the good team at PGM.

At any rate, we'll be interested in any feedback or resolution you find.
Cheers
Trevor

I have never heard of 'Generate' changing the chords on the user. If it did that it would be useless.

Did you save the file after entering chords (before generating)?
Just curious whether there may be a backup file to look at and see the chords and settings from the first save, if it took place.

Otherwise I'm baffled ..

If you open a new session and a new file and enter chords, then hit generate will it do it again?

I erased the whole thing and started over. It did NOT do the same thing. Now note that I started at "vanilla" both times. I have NEVER used transposition so the program has been set to C for years. There is no way that this one time I would have not started with C as my base key. And as I said, if it was a fixed interval I would understand that it transposed. But one chord went up 2 half steps, another went down 2 half steps, an F/G turned into Bb for gods sake.

I will call it an anomaly and forget about it but I hated losing time by having to do things twice. Not like Nashville is calling for the song or anything.... I need it done by Friday to give to a singer at her gig so I'll get it done despite losing a few hours.

I agree Eddie, the fact that keys changed in a non uniform manner is really weird - some up, some down, by differing degrees.

Sometimes 'start again' is the fastest way.

Good luck with the song for Friday.

Yup.... it is, after all, a Windows based operating system...... unless you're on a Mac in which case.... hey it's still a computer.

When things in my studio start to get weird, I have a first course of action plan and that involves save anything I'm working on (if possible) and do a complete studio shutdown. After everything is down and quiet, a fresh cold boot is the order of the day.

That normally puts the world right, on the inside of the DAW. If things in a project are acting strange even after a fresh boot, I close the program and reopen it and start a new project with a new name and attempt to copy the files and track out of the first one. Normally, that solves that issue. I can only recall needed to do the whole create new project thing one time. I don't remember the details..... but that did solve it.

Frustrating, yes...... but when it happens, the sooner you recognize the brick wall, the sooner you can get the ladder.

My guess is that you loaded the demo song by mistake when you were in the style picking dialog. That would definitely change all the chords!

A few things can cause this like loading demo song, or right clicking in chords window and accidentally clicking MIDI chord wizard.
This causes the chords to change instantly with the software's 'best guess' overwriting your manually input chords, but I never heard of 'Generate' causing it.

Sounds to me like this was a singular case, solved by starting over from scratch?

Who knows, but my best guess is data corruption got the upper hand.

I have no idea what happened. All I did was hit GENERATE like I always do and something changed my chord chart. Corruption could not have happened as it was not loaded from anywhere. I saved it once but that should not change what is in RAM.

Whatever. I spent the time to delete the file and recreated from scratch. OCD, ADD and anal retentive Eddie HATES when stuff doesn't work like it is supposed to.

The only thing I am thankful for is that nobody told me to "restore to default settings", the ultimate technician bailout. Software is not supposed to require that to be done on a daily basis.

Thanks Dan, but I am not all that "back". Tired of the "measuring" that goes on here and won't be contributing all that much. No matter what I post I can anticipate the exact 4 users that are going to take a posture 180 degrees opposed. The "last straw" thing was a post a while back where I stated an OPINION. And the Fab 4 all took the time to tell me my OPINION was wrong.

How can an OPINION be wrong?

If you tell me the McMahon Bears were better than the Bradshaw Steelers or the Montana 49er's of the Marino Dolphins, all I'll say is "Okay." rather than tell you why your OPINION is wrong.

Again, "measuring". I thought that stuff stopped in junior high. Certainly by junior year of high school.....

So, lurking some, posting very little.

Well, Eddie, consider that I was born into a world at a time and place when the OPINION of many, including those in academia, was that my my mental abilities were limited, they said, because of the color of my skin.

Just one example, could cite many.

If you or someone else was of the opinion that the Law of Gravity could be violated and stated that you intended to prove that opinion by walking off the edge of the roof of a three story building in the morning, I for one would like to think that there are still others who would take the time and interest to at least try to explain the certain difficulty about to be encountered.

Open Forum is for discussion, by definition.

IMO you are a great guy to have around in these forums.

And I wouldn't want to live in a world where everyone agreed with me 100% of the time.

Yeah, I like ya too Eddie. You have helped improve the product in ways many users don't know about. I'd like to hear from ya more.

If I am in the group above, I apologize.
I can be pretty opinionated, usually based on my own experience.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
