I thought I would move it from here:

http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=246092#Post246092

as this deserves some more attention.

Somewhere back several years ago BIAB load time increased dramatically. No one seemed to notice. Many of us are running SD drives and it was manageable. However, with a recent update the load time had apparently been reduced. The claim was 20% but my experience saw a much more dramatic reduction, from all most a minute to 5 - 10 secs. I was thrilled and mentioned this in the forum. But alas for no apparent reason the load time has again increased. Actually it is inconsistent. Two days ago on my Surface it was 5 secs (wow), today 40 secs.

There must be a fix to this.

To find out exactly what your boot times are, we added a reporting function in BiaB 2014 Build 381.

Do the menu action [main menu] [help] [display log of yellow/green messages]

You will see lines like this:

- Bootup time in milliseconds =11,336 [4/1/2014 8:38:34 AM]

That means it took 11 seconds to bootup. So please search through that log, and post several entries.
Note that this is the time from when BiaB first gets control of the program to when its finished booting and drawn everything. So if there was a problem before that (such as a virus checker blocking things, then the bootup time would be listed as shorter than it really was, since the time we display is when we first get control of the program.

Once we get some data from people, we can work on finding out what is causing a boot delay from some people.

Have Fun!

I tweaked my MSE antivurus to ignore the BIAB program (BBW.EXE) and that dramatically improved my time. Maybe look at something like that.

Start-up time is the most when I open BIAB for the first time of the day. When I close and re-open it's a lot faster.

Here are my most recent bootup logs. Seven seconds seems to be the norm, with an occasional 11-12.

My system takes longer upon the first start of BIAB after a reboot than does a restart. The first entry (today) is an example of this.

Note that I use a SSD boot drive that has the /BB folder (though the RealTracks and RealDrums are on another drive, a regular hard drive).

Always faster after restart, probably because of Windows Cache
Just doing a single launch of the application, no song loaded etc shows a lot of I/O:

My mean and standard deviation looks to be the worst!! Why me?? I hope this can be fixed I hate long load times and my entire working career I have tried to reduce variance (SD^2).

FWIW: I've noticed the incredible number of IO reads too. No other program I use (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Lightroom, or Photoshop, or Cakewalk Sonar X1) takes nearly as long to launch as BIAB. As others have noted, relaunching BIAB results in a much faster time.

Seems BIAB loads a huge number of files it doesn't really need to minimally operate before displaying the chord window. I think old Windows operating system did something similar years ago. MS got around that by changing the series of events, such that the OP displayed the splash and login screens sooner, while the OP continued to load files. Maybe BIAB could do something similar? Seems like a simple programming solution, but I'm no programmer.

It's hard to discern any pattern from these numbers, but I hope the reporting of same helps PG Music. I can see why several of you are frustrated. We haven't heard from rharv yet; it might be his fault.

Those with horrible load times, try disabling your antivirus.

switching on my keyboard and my (usb) soundcard before starting band in a box seems to reduce my loading time with 50 %

The load-up time is also impacted by what soft synths are present on the various tracks. For example, if Sampletank is present on a track when BIAB loads, the time increases noticeably.

Those with horrible load times, try disabling your antivirus.

Peter specifically said this reported time is related only to BIAB and starts only when it has grabbed all the files. So it should not be dependent on any AV scanning. But it is a good idea anyway and I did just this long ago.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
