Newbie here of about 3 weeks. I have a Korg SV 1. Use a Roland amp speaker no mixer. Just bought a JBL LSR 305 5" as a practice amp. I would like to run the audio from my Dell Inspiron 1464 where BIAB lives to these speakers. In the BIAB MIDI/Audio Drivers setup window I currently have no MIDI input driver chosen. MIDI output is set to Microsoft GS wavetable Synth. Synthesizer/Sound Card is set to General MIDI instrument Misc. I have have not altered any settings....all are factory default/ recommended.
Eventually would like to gig with the Roland amp.
Thanks,
Bud

Bud...

Here's what I would do to at least get started:

If you can hear audio from your internal speakers on the Dell, you can just use an audio cable from your "headphone out" jack to your "Roland amp speaker", providing it has an available input to use alongside the Korg.

Not sure how you want to use the JBL.
If it's just for practice as you suggested, run the audio cable to it instead of the Roland. If you want to use the JBL as a monitor, see if the Roland has an "output" you can use to send the signal to the JBL.

You may or may not be satisfied with the "quality" of the sound you get. It stems from your chosen output driver, i.e. the MS GS wavetable synth.

Try the above and report back. If you need more info, let us know and we'll see what else we can do to help.

Good luck!

The headphone jack is OK, but a USB to MIDI interface should give you better fidelity (wider audio bandwidth) and no crackling if you accidentally bump the cable.

They are quite inexepensives

Lloyd and Bob,
Thanks. Sound is distorted on both speakers using headphone to speakers. Bob, I do have a USB to MIDI but the JBL DOES NOT HAVE A MIDI input or output. Since I am not at home right now I don't think the Roland does either. Not being a MIDI user, can I use the adapter PC-USB -MIDI in to Korg- then out to Roland via the standard jacks? Bought your Ultimate Jazz Fakebook and absolutely love it. I'm hooked. Nice work.
Thanks, Bud

Bud:

If you're getting distortion on the speakers of the Roland AND the JBL, I would guess that the volume is set too high on the Dell.

Try turning it down, either the hardware button if it has one, or the Windows Volume icon on the Task bar. Then use the volume knob on the outboard speaker to set the level.

If Mac were here, he might say at this point to make the volume level on the headphone output as loud as you can without distortion, then set subsequent levels. What you are trying to do is approximate the output level of a LINE OUT jack that you don't have. It is very easy with headphones to put out more than that.

I like Notes' point to try to avoid that headphone jack because it has a habit of breaking and, as he said, will crackle terribly if jostled. A real audience killing sound. So, I suggest you get a small USB to audio interface. I've seen these from Griffin for about $30. They give you a noise-free headphone jack that supplies the line-level signal you are really needing here.

Even something as inexpensive as this would be better than using the laptop's headphone jack: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186035

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
