Hello,
First, sorry if this post is misplaced, but I don't know where to find some efficient help.
I've changed my computer for a brand new tower with a Intel i5 4670k processor, a MB ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z87-A, Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller and NVIDIA Corporation GK104 HDMI Audio Controller.
I have Win 8.1 64 bits.
And a Edirol FA-66 external (firewire, which is OK too) soundcard, which looks to be correctly installed, ready to work but ... it doesn't!
I've tried the 2 drivers from the Roland website, the Vista drivres (I've read someone had made it running with it, but not for me), no midi signal (in the RealBand monitor or in MidiOx).
My master keyboard is OK: it sends messages to my two EMU ESI 4000 without any problem. The cable is OK (I've tested it).
I've written for some help to Roland without any response.
Could someone help me? I was researcher in ... computers but it doesn't help!
Thanks a lot because my PG Music softwares have less interest without this midi connection.
Awaiting for my savior!!!
Best regards.
François from Normandy.

Is this driver selected as the MIDI input device in BiaB or RB (whichever you are using)?
Is it in the list of available MIDI input devices?
The software must be told to use it.

Hello,
Yes, of course. It seems that I have the same problem with audio: I've plugged a bass in my Edirol and I can see the signal on the FA-66 (yellow led), in the windows sound panel (Audio record in BIAB, test level and the Edirol line in 1 with a kind of vu-meter on the right of the window shows activity when I play) but nothing in the "dedicated" BIAB vu-meter (no green light).
It seems that I encounter a problem between my soundcard and BIAB.
I've let Windows choosing running parameters for BIAB and it runs as compliant for Vista. Is it right?
Thanks a lot.

I suggest visiting the audio driver setting in BB.

http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq35.htm#11

"In Band-in-a-Box: Opt. | Preferences | Audio | [Drivers]."

Hello,
Good advice. But not enough: I've changed some parameters and when I record audio + midi, I can hear (without direct monitoring, this has to be solved too) the recorded sound of my bass, but nothing coming from my master keyboard.
Thanks for your help.
François.

You're running Win 8 64 bit. The Roland download page here has the driver for Win 8 64:

http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/731/downloads/

You use this one, forget about Windows wanting to run Biab under Vista or whatever it is. Also, this interface includes it's own ASIO 2.0 driver, you probably need that for audio and to control the latency but with your new computer the regular WDM drivers might be ok too. This is one of those things you can experiment with.

You select the Roland driver in the midi window inside Biab as already described and you select the ASIO driver in Biab's audio window. For now set the buffering at about 240. If you get playback glitches increase it. You need ASIO for direct monitoring but not for recording and regular playback.

Regarding the MIDI input... it sounds like the FA-66 shows up in the MIDI Driver Setup dialog in Band-in-a-Box, correct?

In Band-in-a-Box, open the MIDI Monitor (under the Window menu), and see if there is any activity at all when you play your MIDI keyboard.

Hello,
I've changed MME for ASIO. I have uninstalled the Roland driver and re-installed it. Now, I can hear my bass even when not recording. If I use the "record audio & midi" function, all is OK for audio. I've lighten up my keyboard before launching BIAB. The Roland drivers are showing up in BIAB dialogs. I've unchecked all what concerning midi thru. And when I open the BIAB midi monitor, play my keyboard ... strictly nothing to view and to hear!
I agree with you: it's surely a mistake somewhere in the configuration. But what?
May you help me a lot more before i'll loose my last hairs? And the 2015 version will come. My first one was running on a Atari 1040 STF!
Thanks for your help and patience.
Best regards.

Good, this is progress. Now, you didn't say what your keyboard is. Is it a newer controller with a USB connection to your computer? Or is it an older stage keyboard with regular DIN type midi connectors?

If it's USB then the keyboard should show up in the midi INPUT (on the left) window and you have to highlight it. If it doesn't show up there then it hasn't installed properly on your system. Then you have to set the keyboard's midi channel to match Biab's THRU instrument channel number. I think it's 4 but look it up if that doesn't work.

Hello,
Sorry,my keyboard is a Fatar Studiologic SL-880 bought in 2000. And still working. It doesn't have any USB connection, only usual midi (DIN) plugs. So, I don't see it in my PC and it seems normal. Do you know a way to test my cables, with a multimeter, for example? There are only two possibilities: a bad transmission (I doubt a little with 2 cables) or a configuration problem concerning only the midi (the audio is OK now).
I still don't know what to do!
Below two screen copies of my configuration (the second is on page 2 of this post).
Thanks for your help.
Best regards.
François

Here's how it works with a midi keyboard.

1. Select the keyboard in the midi input window. Since your keyboard does not have it's own driver like a newer controller does, the keyboard has to be plugged into the midi ports on your FA-66 which you have selected. I see you already have ASIO selected as your audio driver.

2. A keyboard only works using the Thru instrument which is on the far right of the other regular instruments.

3. You must match the midi channel between the Biab Thru and your keyboard. Go to Opt>Pref>Channels and in that window you'll see what midi channel Biab uses for all the instruments. The Thru channel is 5. Set your keyboard to transmit on midi channel 5.

4. You keyboard is just a controller it has no sounds of it's own. Hover your mouse over the Thru instrument and you see an option to select a midi instrument patch from whatever midi synth you're using. If you have Sampletank installed along with the Biab HQ instruments you can use one of those patches.

Once all this is set up you should be able to play your keyboard and hear the sound. When you do that you will probably hear a delay or latency. If it bothers you, come back and ask about that. Handling latency is another discussion.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
