How about having certain level headed long time forum members set up with limited moderator privileges?

That way, when the spammers come calling on a Friday night, we don't have to set here and look at the damage that a spammer does in a few minutes time for the entire weekend.

I'm suggesting that PG Music and Peter Gannon select a few folks here who would have the ability to remove spammers immediately.

I haven't seen many offensive threads here (fortunately) like I have seen in other forums, so locking a thread or banning a user doesn't seem to happen here as far as I can recall.... but I have now seen two serious spammer attacks, both of which occurred over a weekend. It would be nice if there were several... perhaps 3 to 6 regulars here who could remove them and place them into a hidden folder to be reviewed and permanently deleted or re-instated as the case might be, by the PG staff when they return to work on Monday mornings.

What say ye Peter?

Another forum site I visit has recently done this and the "user mods" have been doing a great job keeping the spam out almost as soon as it appears. Locked threads and banned folks are more common there but again, that has worked well.

Sure beats having to look at post after post of this:

I can only add weight to that, your right we don't see much rubbish but annoying when we do, and can do nothing about it except report it by clicking the "Notify Moderator" button.

One forum that has user moderators successfully is the Cakewalk site (makers of SONAR). That may be the one you mentioned, Herb. This does work well, and it's been in place a few months.

Another feature there that works very well is if three users flag a post, it gets removed for review. Spam doesn't last long.

That could be useful. Those moderators need to be from different time zones around the world to be really effective.

But as I said in another thread about spammers, being able to flag a post/thread could already be helpful. There are other forums where three "spam flags" only show the flagged title of the post. A user still could read that post if the user wanted to. YouTube has such a feature and forum.dict.cc has a similar feature.

I just don't know if the programmers of this forum software here have this feature implemented.

If not, some forum members with these privileges sure would be useful.

+1 for showing a flag that a post has been reported to the Moderators.

I don't think there is any need for more "management" at all.
I've got enough of that in my day-to-day life...

Whoever is looking after this forum is doing ONE HECK OF A JOB!!!!

I don't think anyone is advocating management, just spam removal.

I agree that there is a defined need for better spam management.

Not necessarily management or rulings on users posts, but just the ability to remove spam and block further posts from the spammers.

Moreover, this could be improved by nominating users from different time-zones. Creating a 24-hours watch, so to speak.

Also, another +1 is for an external flag to show the spam had already been reported.

There are many proven, responsible and genuine users of the forum that trust could be placed with for managing spam posts.

PGM could make the rules on how this management would be used.

I do hope that PGM adopt some form of better control than what is currently available.

Trevor

Yup, I was referring to the newly instituted Cakewalk user moderators. They have limited ability to moderate the forum and there's a small handful of them watching the forums for spammers, trolls, and flamers. I had forgotten that Cakewalk has a system set up where any user can FLAG a post as spam, and when 3 different users FLAG it, it gets removed from view and goes into a hidden folder for the moderators to review.

It's been a while since I used that 3 strikes feature over there but I do think there's a FLAG icon that pops up to indicate a post is flagged by other users. I've seen spam disappear in a matter of minutes with users flagging it.

Even that feature would work well to eliminate the spam. I don't think that we need to have "user mods" spread out around the world in various time zones.....Just having the ability to FLAG posts and a " 3 strikes and you're out" set up would work. Having PG staff mods check in on the weekends would be a good idea too. If PG doesn't want to give this authority to user mods to remove the spam then perhaps a "direct to the moderators" email link so that we could notify them on the weekends.

There's many different ways this problem can be dealt with. So far, it's not been a huge problem. But here in the past several weeks, I've seen 2 major spamming attacks, and we get the occasional lone spammer who realizes that most forums are left un-moderated on weekends and decides to post a few commercial spams for their website or new music CD release.

Yep, also agree Herb. The 3 strikes and you're out idea would be a very good approach.

Additionally, with the three strikes method, only forum members of a certain title level should be able to flag, i.e. journeyman can, but not newbie.

Later,

That works when a spammer posts one spam. However, the one a few weeks ago had 3 FULL PAGES of spams.....the first forum member's post was near the bottom of page 3.

Nope.... there needs to be some way to remove that kind of attack quickly.

The latest one wasn't nearly that bad but it did have multiple posts on the pages it hit.

Later,

Also, sometimes you don't know it's spam until you actually see what the content is.

My thoughts exactly! Forums that add captcha prevent a small amount of annoying spam at the cost of annoying every user every time they post!

Captcha just doesn't seem to be very robust these days...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
