I'm finding that because the tracks now take names that indicate what is loaded on them, I'm getting confused periodically when it comes to working out what track is what because, every now and then, it's necessary to know the original static name for that track.
Helping users solve problems is also a challenge sometimes because they might have two (or more) tracks called Piano or Guitar. This challenge can be compounded when Melody and/or Soloist tracks are involved.
When BIAB 2015 first came out, all was good because I could remember the original tracks. After 5 months of changing names, though, those memories have faded and now I have to look up what the original track names were when I need to.
Possible considerations ...
1. Use track numbers rather than names (maybe with an option to display either names or numbers so that a user can change between the displays).
2. Have an option to display the original static track names. It would be useful if such an option was stored in BIAB settings.
3. Have multiple display options that allow for (a) dynamic naming, (b) static naming, (c) numerical naming. This would be similar to displaying chords in multiple ways such as Nashville notation, solfa notation, etc.
#2 or #3 above would be my personal choice.
The above being said, I also find it useful that tracks have dynamic names because it's a quick way of identifying what Realtrack is where. I believe that having easily accessible display options would be valuable. I can see myself regularly using both dynamic and static displays of track names in the same way that I change the chord display (sometimes I use normal chords (dynamic display) and other times I use Nashville notation (static display)).

Any of these could be helpful, especially if the static names are the default for new users. Then the manual and the Help matches and makes more sense. Only after you've worked with the program awhile should the names start changing.
I always liked John Ford's suggestion of using a number AND then the instrument name. Maybe this is option #4? That would look most like the scribble strip on a professional control surface.

if you de-select Edit-Preferences-Display-Show Custom Track Labels, you get the old names back

Hi Noel Yes, I understand the confusion. There was a suggestion previously just like you mentioned, a number as well as a name. See this post. I agree, it would be good if a future revision included both. Best Trevor

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
