This one has me stumped and I don't recall this ever happening to me. Could be my system, but still don't know why.

I created a song in RealBand with multiple tracks *mostly MIDI using TTS-1 synth, along with RealDrums), clearly stereo.

Then I went to Render all tracks to stereo WAV (under the Render command in the menu).

Every time I do it, I only get a mono file.

I then tried an old existing file that I know rendered previously to stereo (because I had the stereo file along side it). It also rendered to mono.

I tried a different default synth and got the same result. I haven't rebooted the computer yet, but will try that next.

RealBand 2015 build 8.

Any ideas?

Are you absolutely sure your stereo file is mono? What makes you think that?

My test would be to take any 2 tracks in the original mix, pan them fairly wide so it's obvious that they are panned and listen in headphones to confirm.... then, do the export like you normally do, and take that file, the one that you think is mono and have a listen in headphones.

If you still have wide panning obvious, you have a stereo export. If it's all straight up the center, yup, you have mono.

Once you figure that out with the test, you can work towards a solution if one is necessary.

John,

It sounds like the following checkbox might have become activated. (It's found under the Edit menu.)

Hope this helps,
Noel

Is Mono checkbox selected in the mixer screen?
That would do it.

I will check that. I still do it the old fashioned way from the "Render" menu. The menu says "Render to Stereo" and there are no options except the file name. You would think that if the setting was mono, there should have been a warning box when you select "Render to Stereo". I will check out that setting when I get back to my music computer, but I'm pretty sure I didn't set it, as I can't remember not always rendering to stereo.

Regarding Noel's suggestion; one other user found this setting enabled and didn't remember changing it either.. so worth checking.

I think it's possible a Windows setting could cause this also, but I'd think you would have noticed this before if it was that. Have you checked your drivers being used?

Noel, that was it. Merge to mono was set. I unchecked it, well I couldn't just uncheck it. To do so, you actually have to merge a track to another track (which can be a blank track), then delete the destination track. If you just uncheck the box and hit cancel, it remains checked.

And the Track, Merge command is really designed to merge one or more tracks to a separate track within your arrangement, among other tracks that could be any mix of mono or stereo, so I'm not sure why it affects the render to wav command.

Looks like some adjustments need to be made.

And Herb, I'm positive it was mono because when I load the resulting file into another audio editor (or even back into RealBand), it comes up as a mono file (RealBand even tells me it's mono).

And I apologize for posting this in the BIAB forum, not RealBand. Wasn't paying attention.

After lunch, I'll post a wish list to make some fixes.

John,

Re: rharv's post:

While I don't want to take you on a wild goose chase I offer this:

In order to get a full stereo output from my laptop for my eConcerts I had to go into "control panel", click "recording" then "advanced" and follow the steps to make sure the output is indeed "stereo".

Like I said this may or may not be relevant in your case but wanted to offer it anyway, just in case.

Take Care,

Thanks, Danny. Nope that wasn't it. It was exactly what Noel said; however, I believe from a workflow perspective, it shouldn't have been. After I was able to uncheck that box, the file rendered just fine to stereo.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
