Yep. I've seen those that sweat the small details as they sweep on to the grand fallacy. And those who never learn that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." But some forge ahead based on reasonable anylysis time and a large helping of courage, gut and heart. Onward!

I'm not surprised that your observation of life has yielded the same conclusion! You and Janice are clearly both people who fit the profile of creative people. And your active lifestyle also testifies to your ability to take action and "git 'er done!" whether the topic is a race or a song. I really like knowing people like you! ;-)

I'm not so sure about number 2. I heard somewhere that Mark Zuckerburg wears a grey Tshirt to avoid "decision fatigue". Evidence of this fatigue was huge on our recent trip in the US. The daily decisions were more exhausting than the driving. I think it is better to make a quick decision about non trivial stuff (like what I am going to wear today) and leave some room for the really big ones like (am I going to marry this person). The better your ability to distinguish between what is trivial and what is not is a sign of intelligence.

"Constantly, ideas are trying to find human collaborators."

So, that must be it, I'm either running too fast or hiding too well. grin

That is a difficult point.

Some decisions you have to make are difficult by the number of choices. (Like: You're hungry but the restaurant's menu offers too many choices. Reduce the obvious oversupply by asking simple questions: Do I want to eat greens, fish, or meat? or: How much do I want to spend? Then continue from there and suddenly there are only two or three meals to choose from.)

Some decisions you have to make are difficult by the quality of choices. (Like spending time alone, or spending time with others. Both offer great value -- depending on the reason.)

Being in a foreign country often both reasons for difficult decision making occur simultaneously.

I remember driving through Missouri and suddenly seeing an "ALDI" (a victuals discounter from Germany). I was curious about their line of products and how different it was compared to what I knew from home -- I still don't, I don't regret it, but I'm still curious. I just didn't have the time to get off the highway and take that stop. The uncertainties of the distance still to cover and the planned stops on the route to my appointment that evening prevented it. The quick decision: What is more important? On the way back: ALDI was closed.

I think another key to creativity is to let it happen.

You can't force creativity and say, "I'm going to be creative today." That won't work.

Instead you just have to relax and let the creativity happen, and when the idea comes, turn of your "No that won't work" censor (I think all artists have that one lurking in the back of the brain).

And I wouldn't go quoting Mark Zuckerburg for creativity. He stole the Facebook idea from classmates in Harvard and they successfully sued him for millions.

Creativity befuddles me. I can go for long periods of time and not have any interest in writing a song but then one day something pops in my head and I write a complete verse walking across a room. I'd always attributed it to laziness but maybe I just don't always have my creativity antenna up...

that very point was covered in one of the TED talks! My take on that was to minimize the time spent on MUNDANE decisions, the ones we make over and over again every day... like what to wear, what to have for dinner etc. That frees the mind to play, and we are more creative when we play.

When the writer of the article said to try new things, I think he was talking about life experiences that broaden the amount of information we can get creative with. If you only knew 100 words, it would be harder to write a novel than if you knew 10,000. But you might get by with 100 words in everyday life.

In a nutshell, simplify the mundane, but explore new things in play mode.

That's exactly what you did on your trip... you explored for fun and discovered a host of new things, but in order to do it, you minimized the mundane decisions.

I turned of my compositional "No that won't work" censor a long time ago and have an automatic "what if?" mode instead.
Some people like my music but a lot go WTF
Probably 80% of my lyrics are "subconcious"; if I have to force them then I move on to a new song, keeping all drafts in case the juices start flowing again.

BIAB, to me, is musically excellent because of the different styles "on tap". My band is always gonna do what I say now whereas with actual people playing I got frozen out if I went "off the wall".

just my thoughts

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
