The RealDrums are audio files. They will use your sound card for output. The Ensoniq can be interfaced with BIAB as long as the synth and your computer have the ports (midi or usb) to do it. If you use your Ensoniq and want to use RealDrums, you would have to balance the audio output to match the midi output of your Ensoniq. If you want to use the Ensoniq drums, you can 'turn off' the RealDrums and use the Midi drums. But after you hear the RealDrums, you probably won't want to do that. They are very good.

Recording using an external synth is only a matter of mixing the synth and the RealDrums into your recording device.

Hi, and welcome!

Please tell us the model of your Ensoniq keyboard so that I can find out if its internal MIDI synth is easily compatible with BIAB.

Of course, you can always use the keyboard as a controller into BIAB and use the free VSC DXi MIDI synth that comes bundled with BIAB for your sounds, too, so you should be good to go either way.

Welcome!

Yes, you can get the full benefit of your Ensoniq sounds because a soundcard (wth respect to MIDI data) merely acts as a transmission station to get instructions from BIAB over into your synth.

BIAB primarily outputs MIDI which isn't sound or a sound file but instructions in code (like Morse code) that MIDI compatible equipment and software can 'read' and respond to, making sounds in ways the code has stipulated.

If your Ensoniq has some great synth sounds then if I were you I'd familiarise myself with the part of its manual that deals with MIDI. You also need to familiarise yourself with the concept of GM, or General Midi, which is the universal standard for 128 fundamental MIDI sounds with 1 being a piano.

Your soundcard probably has a MIDI in and out, so you can first connect its MIDI out to the MIDI in of your Ensoniq. That's the first step to getting BIAB to 'play' your Ensoniq's sounds. You may need to find/create what's called a Patch Map so that BIAB can address all the sounds on your synth.

There's a lot more, so I won't bang on! This PG site has tutorials on many aspects of the above. Have a browse around 'Support'. There are some bits and pieces on my bio web site also that may point the way, start here.
Best wishes - you've started your never-ending, at times frustrating, but by and large very fulfilling, journey into the wonders of recording!

John

from the manual, available here http://www.emu.com/support/files/download2.asp?Centric=645&Legacy=0&Platform=1 "Using the ZR-76 with General MIDI" you can use it with biab

however to take advantage of all he sounds available you may find this INSmaker Tutorial useful

http://www.fumph.com/?page_id=16

the idea is you create a cakewalk .ins file with INSmaker then convert that file to a biab .pat patch map file using these instructions

HOW TO CONVERT A POWERTRACKS PRO AUDIO .INI FILE OR CAKEWALK .INS FILE TO A BAND-IN-A-BOX PATCH MAP (.PAT FILE)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
