As some of you know my mobo blew up.
I have now purchased another one and will be rebuilding soon.

I did not get the opportunity to prep for this, so I plan to take my SSD and plug it in. I am not sure what Win 7 will do, as I think it might detect it as 'another' computer and refuse to run or something..

Has anyone been through this? Does anyone know? Googling, they advise back up, and prep, which I cannot do.

I have the full retail version on disk, with my ID number

thank you all..

Z

If you have access to another PC and a USB to SATA interface it's worth getting an image before you start (preferably to an external HDD).

Now, it MAY have problems starting, in which case it will advise you to use the install CD to do a repair install.

This should preserve all your settings etc. and just update the drivers and system configs. It should not break your software.

It will also require you to register it again as it will certainly identify the hardware change. This isn't a problem and should happen online without any problems. If there are difficulties, then it will tell you a phone number to call and you can register manually. Just tell 'em that your MB failed and you had to replace it - should be all OK

I don't have experience with Windows 7 in this case but with earlier versions of Windows.

In earlier versions of windows using the same boot disk in another computer, i.e. if a different processor is used, did not work -- in my case. It is worth a try.

The repair option is also a valid option.

As said before: get a different running computer and just copy or better: clone your disk to another one just to remain on the safe side. And then -- even if it is more work -- use the clone for the test. Get the clone running, if possible, and check your installation. do all the programs work, are all the authorizations left intact, and such.

Then just re-clone tis installation on your ssd and install that one.

Desktop or laptop?

Yes, I had the same thing happen - motherboard went bad on a Windows 7 PC. I assume the SSD drive you refer to is the boot drive, and you expect to plug that into your motherboard and have it boot. It will very likely balk at Windows just as Lawrie said, but I was able to call Microsoft, explain the bad motherboard, and get the code to continue. Easy, actually, and it worked fine from there. I chose to keep my other drives unplugged, and add them after. The drive letters may be assigned differently, but you can change that.

My understanding of what will happen is that, absent technical issues, it will run for 30 days, giving you time to reregister with Microsoft. After that time, if unregistered,?it will lock and prevent use entirely.

This was true when MS went to Windows registration with XP. I have not heard of a change since. M

I have a back up that is adequate, of all files.
My days are busy - family. I took an image too.
I shall start buy trial and error and post here the results.
The kind of answers here are the same as google - contradictory in parts. I expect there are different results according to conditions.

thank you friends

I have read on net that if you upgrade your motherboard and want to install the OEM copy of windows, that Microsoft doesn't allow this as regards licencing, but usually is ok if its a failed motherboard, they will give you a new key to activate.

Lucky enough yet not to have this problem but that is my understanding.

Lawrie,
You know you don't have to register it, you only have to "Activate" it.. <grin>

The phone option Lawrie mentioned is a good suggestion, especially when re-installing a Windows product on a new machine. It seems much more forgiving than the online method.

You'll need a Windows key though, if you have that from the original purchase.

The main problem upgrading motherboards is AHCI Sata drivers, if it don't boot pass the little color balls you will need to reset the SATA Driver, if it does keep booting it will just install all the new hardware it finds then restart else just use any missing drivers off the MB CD.
If it don't boot just download Hiren's Boot CD boot
Choose > Mini XP
go to the Menu in taskbar > Registry > Fix Hard Diisk Controller
Press T for Target and set it to C:\Windows > Enter (you can check the drive letter for main os by clicking "My Computer" icon)
Press M to update Mass Storage Controller

Restart Remove CD

If Hiren's don't boot go into your BIOS and set the SATA Mode to IDE instead of AHCI ** but once you restart after fixing HDC in Mini XP go back into your BIOS and set it back to AHCI.

If Hiren's don't fix it there is another fix that will do it, you just need to boot from you Win7 DVD, so let me know how you go.

Advanced Method if Hiren's don't work:

Extract Fix_7hdc.zip

Put Fix_7hdc.vbs on a usb stick (in a USB 2.0 not Blue 3.0)
Boot from Win7 Install DVD
Press Shift+F10 to get Command Prompt
Type> CD F(or E, G) >Enter for usb stick
Type> Dir >Enter to make sure it is on the usb stick
Type> cscript Fix_7hdc.vbs /enable /search >Enter

Fix_7hdc.zip

EDIT: if you want to change your grandmotherboard before it fails use
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9741862
this will do the same as above but needs a running PC.

D'oh! I knew it was the wrong word at the time, but I just couldn't drag the right one up from the deep, dark depths.

If the new motherboard is similar or not too much different from the original, Windows 7 is a bit more forgiving than the old XP used to be, and will quite often boot up with no problem.
However if a major difference in motherboards and you do have a retail version of Windows 7 on disk, you should be able to use that disk to do a repair as stated earlier.

That's interesting. I have never had to "do a repair" although I could have with my retail copies of Windows on DVD. Once I had reauthorized by phone, no repair was needed. Intriguing idea, though.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
