Whenever I notate a new melody and play it back, it plays a MIDI instrument (i.e. banjo 106). Am I able to designate a RealTrack instrument to play my melody back? If so, can I change from one instrument to another to hear how they each sound with the same melody. I realize that BIAB is designed to provide backup instruments, but I had hoped it could give realistic melodies also? When I change the melody instrument to a RealTrack one, I get a real instrument that plays an improvised version of my melody, not the original melody. Any help you can give a BIAB 2016 novice will be appreciated.

No, you cannot get exact MIDI playback using RealTracks at this time.
RealTracks = prerecorded audio (not samples). Notation means MIDI (which is sent to a Synth).
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I just recognized that I can change the MIDI instrument by selecting a new patch. This will work for me to at least give me some variety and not sound too synthetic. Thanks

Gaelyn, yes, you can change the MIDI sounds. You can also spend almost any amount of money on either a hardware or software MIDI synth. The better ones are much more realistic sounding. If you would like some recommendations, let us know what you are using now and what your budget is.

I am simply using my laptop and wanting to share some music with friends so we can play together weekly. I have no other equipment. I am a good amateur musician on a very limited social security budget. Now that I have seen how to give me a little variety in my instruments, it will have to do. Thanks everyone for your advice. I am really enjoying learning how to better use my BIAB 2016.

Larry, that's fine. It's likely you are using the built-in Realtek soundcard and Microsoft sounds, but you can do much better than that, even for free. I will leave it to others who know more, but I'm sure you will get some recommendations for a free General MIDI VSTi. I encourage you to try that or other solutions and you should like what you hear a lot better.

Matt is correct. Investigate free soundfont players and soundfonts (SF2). There are many very good SF2s that are free and as good as or better than some purchased GM sets and they are a lot better than the Realtek sound card. Plus with the free SF2 editor you can replace any SF2 with another, thus I you don't like the trumpet sound in a GM set you can replace it. When I was using SF2s I used to have different sound sets, for instance I had all of my trumpet sounds together. This was in addition to my SF2 GM set. Plus with BiaB and RB you can load as many SF2 sets as your memory will allow. Although SF2 is old technology it is still better than the installed computer sound cards IMHO. I hope this helps.
I want my last spoken words to be "I hid a million dollars under the........................"
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
