Ok, I don't know much about this end of the music industry. I mean, I know the terms but application is another thing... I have an flash drive that has a fair bit of music on it. It's all different genres with different productions. The levels are all pretty consistent, as I use mp3gain for that. So, I'm not turning the volume up and down as we drive. What is not the same is the sonic fullness/eq. One song you can hear the bass pretty well, and the next song...which I know has a decent bass part, is just not there. These aren't pirated songs or anything. These are songs that I own the cd and rip to my library, all from original cds. I get from one cd to another things change, but man, when you do songs on random it's REALLY annoying. Probably only to me, but still. I know stations use a multitude of things, but do you have any suggestions for a chain and settings to just keep a fairly consistent sound from one song to the next? I'm not sure if there is a omni compressor or something that you can just put on everything? I'm thinking maybe of using the multi-band compressor in audition but thought I would see if there is a simpler way first. Maybe similar to MP3gain, but does a bit more? thanks! This is so NOT my area of knowing much! In short, I would like something that you can just run everything in and do what a station does. I know they don't sit an edit every song!

HTL,
PG Dynamics is excellent.
I might try this order.
1. Noise Filter 2. Soft knee Compression 3. PG Dynamics
You might also try the Vinyl Plug-in.
Gopher it!
Donny
PS: What DAW are you using? Realband in the Windows version is fantastic. (I may have presumed you're running Windows).

The system you're listening on is always a variable. Our large multi genre library is most consistent on my KRK self powered studio monitors. Next best is the Harman Kardon audio system in my Subaru. The most inconsistent is our larger "living room" system with Polk speakers and a Yamaha sub. On that system the bass is very variable in gain from song to song unless I make adjustments on the sub. Consumer end post production effects like compression can help but they can also destroy the original mix very quickly. FWIW, etc.
Bud
PS Another variable can enter if you are converting files to mp3's.

SO as I understand it...it's all commercial music professionally recorded and mastered.... levels are good, but the bass (that's what you specifically mentioned) is lacking in some and not in others. Correct? My question: Why are you listening to MP3's and not the waves? You're losing a ton of data with the MP3 vs Wave files on the CD's. First thing I would do is have a look and listen to the CD versions on that same system in the car. Especially if the system is a good system, many folks can easily hear a difference in quality between the two. Check that first. Theoretically speaking, if the tracks were all recorded properly and aside from the obvious differences in the makeup of the band.... the quality should be flat across the board. Even with the MP3's.... but since an MP3 is about a tenth the size of the wave.... they removed 9 out of 10 bits of data.... something has to change when you do that. When I listen to say...Merle Haggard, to Allison Krauss, and then to Def Lepard, followed by ZZ Top, and then to my original tunes, I should not have to make any adjustments to my system to hear the bass in any of them. I have an MP3 player that reproduces the audio spectrum with consistency. But when I listen on speakers, I really prefer the wave versions. You should not have to, and radio stations do not, to my knowledge, have anything other then the normal compressors/limiters they use to push the max volume from the program material. The DJ.. if they even have one.... doesn't set there tweeking the EQ. They use automatic compression/limiting to avoid the spikes and dips because it reflects directly on the power the transmitter puts out... they like that to stay within a certain range for optimal operation within the FCC's limits for them to avoid fines. Was that helpful or just rambling?

Caaron At a radio station the broadcasting engineer is responsible setting all of that which is why some radio station's overall sound is slightly different than others. Back in the AM days Level Devil was at alot of stations. A more modern one for Am and FM signals is Optimod, a combined multi band compressor, high freq limiter, lpf, etc., which the engineer tweaks/mods to suit the genre. Here's a link to a site you may find interesting. http://www.orban.com/support/orban/techtopics/optiair/

Josie B,
Wow! Excellent one-stop recording advice. Thanks.
The best ever tutorial on compression was written by a British Audio Engineer, Jezzer Wakefield, a dear friend of Mac and I. Unfortunately, a HD meltdown zapped the file.
Thanks for the information.

wow! I got A LOT of information! Cool and thank you! To answer a few questions... At home, I simply have the PG products and Audition. I have access to a lot more with work, but am going to say I don't. I simply don't want to be dragging and batch processing this stuff at work for a a "joy ride." I am using mp3's because they are small and I'm usually crunched for time when I put songs on the flash drive. Right now there's just over 900 songs on it. I am trying to get a mix of what everyone in the family likes...2 parents and 6 kids. You would think that would be hard, but we've done ok with it. Nothing against commercials, but after listening to them all day for my job, they are sort of the LAST thing I want to hear when driving for a few hours! As I mentioned, I do have that I don't have to turn volume up and down, but the bass is clearly less than desired on some songs that have some decent bass parts. Between you and I (ha ha) the stereo is not all that great. It's on a 2015 Toyota odyssey. It does have all three bands of eq though! I may be asking too much of what the stereo is going to be able to do. If it is as it is, it's not the worst. It's just sometimes there is a really tasty bass lick I would like my wife to hear/or the kids and it's just not there. Perhaps they disabled the bass on purpose I swear I'm not one of those rewind and make them listen guys...very often...not as often as some people I know at least...it's a sliding scale...I'll stop now. Thanks for all the advice! I may play with it for fun and see what happens.

It may be more of a function of the speakers than anything else.
How does that same music sound on your studio speakers and maybe your home stereo compared to the car?

There are FM-type compression plugins out there if you want to tinker around. Broadcast, Optimod, Prosoniq Dynasone .. YMMV but those are a few you could try. I'm not sure of your intent though, since the original source material is a big factor, as well as the monitoring system (in combination).
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

An easy solution might be to add a powered (amplifier + speaker + enclosure) subwoofer to your Toyota's existing speaker system. They are available in a range of sizes and prices. They even have some that can fit underneath a seat. Crutchfied is a respected website for automotive audio. ++ HERE ++ is a link to the powered subwoofers. Crutchfield also offers free installation support and can offer some suggestions about tuning the subwoofer so you can hear the bass frequencies you want without becoming a boom box sound alike.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I can tell we are all musicians here. With some friends who aren't I sometimes get the "who cares, is it that important?" vibe from.
Sometimes on those longer drives as the rest of the "bus" is asleep, music is the best friend you could have!
Thanks again all!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
